Lost and Delirious: Survivor: Marquesas - Episode 4: Oops, They Did It Again!
by Jim Van Nest Published: March 21, 2002
Hello good people and welcome to another edition of Lost and Delirious. When last we spoke, Maraamu had done the unthinkable. They voted off their strongest member and leader, Hunter. Will this strategy pay off for Rob, Sean and Co.? Or will Gina be able to ease on in and cause a riff between them? And what of this great surprise promised to us in the commercials? What affect will it have on the two tribes? And will Rotu just get naked and do what they are all obviously dying to do? These questions and many more are but a few pixels away, my friends.
POLAR OPPOSITES
As we do every week, we begin our show in the Maraamu camp right after the Tribal Council vote. Rob is feeling REALLY good about himself. Very proud of the way he and Sean blind-sided Hunter and sent the former navy pilot jetting off the island. Gina is marveling at how stupid this tribe actually is. While she understands that she and Hunter were on the outside looking in on the Maraamu alliance, she doesn’t understand the logic of voting off the strongest member of an already weak tribe. She tries to ask the rest why Hunter got the vote and all she gets is a BS answer from Sarah. Something like, she had a couple people in mind, and he was just the one she voted for. Writer’s aside: Yeah, yeah….whatever! We all know why she voted Hunter. This girl is so dumb, she can’t spell out the people’s names and always writes their initials. She has no idea why she voted for Hunter other than that’s what Rob told her to do. Plain and simple. Gina was sure she was the one to go that night…but now she’s EXTRA sure that if they lose again, which they likely will, she’ll be back at the hotel making out with the dreamy Hunter in a very short 3 days.
At the complete opposite end of the spectrum, we check in with Rotu in time to catch John braiding Neleh’s hair. This team just gets along so well. As Gabe puts it, unity and love is why they succeed. Everyone working for the good of everyone else. Everybody loves everybody else and they’re just one big family. We now learn that while trying to add some flavor to their bland dinner, they found out that toasted coconut is quite a tasty treat. They’re practically OD’ing on the stuff. I think they’ll all be checked into rehab by the time this is done. You know, if I didn’t know better, I’d think Mark Burnett was playing up the love-fest in this tribe as a signal that it was all about to come crashing down around them. But, like I said. I know better.
A NEW TWIST ON AN OLD IDEA
So, right off the bat, we get some mail and everyone is off to the reward challenge. Or are they? Turns out this time it’s not a challenge, but rather “an activity”, as Jeff puts it. In the sand are 13 wooden discs. One for each contestant. Their job is to go stand on one. Completely random. Just so long as it’s one person per disc. Well, Zoe stood on the disc closest to Jeff, so she gets to start. He has her step off her disc, pick it up and pick up the buff underneath it. OH. MY. GOD. They’re switching tribe members!!!! Never saw it coming, did you? Well, none of the survivors saw it coming, that’s for sure. Zoe looked like she was gonna poke out Jeff’s eyeballs and feed them to him. Anyway, the NEW Rotu and Maraamu shake out like this:
While everyone looks shocked and confused, the two people that seem the most affected are Kathy and Neleh who actually start crying at the thought of leaving the Love Shack. Jeff does take a moment to let these folks know that the number of members in each tribe is still 8-5 in favor of Rotu, and to let them know that this switch was planned long before they got to the Marquesas.
CHECKING OUT THE NEW DIGS
When the new folks get to Maraamu, they are amazed at the amount of fresh fruit lying around. Limes, grapefruits and mangoes are everywhere. Considering they’ve been eating slimy shellfish and coconuts for 10 days, the fresh fruit is awfully good to them. While eating and getting to know each other, talk turns to Hunter and how surprised they were to see him gone. Sarah begins a speech bout how strong he was and what a great leader he was. They focused on Gina while Sarah was talking and the expression was priceless. Gina looked like she could’ve killed Sarah right there. Writer’s aside: If they really want some decent ratings for this show, I’d like to suggest a series of wrestling matches, preferably in Jell-O (although mud or oil would work). Two great matches would be Sean vs. Hunter and Gina vs. Sarah. I figure if Tonya vs. Paula can win its time slot, these matches might set records.
Meanwhile, back at Camp Love, Vee, Rob and Sean are getting acquainted with their new surroundings and tribe-mates. They’d hardly landed and the Rotu members started getting back to work. Of course, this was a complete shock for the lazy ex-Maraamu. Rob is having a hard time figuring out how he’s going to overcome the 5-3 Rotu advantage and stay in the game. At this time, he also decides to assess the new members of the tribe. He mentions that Gabe is pretty cool and a real braniac. He goes on to say he probably thinks he’s a lot smarter than he is. His first impression of John was “he’s a big-time queer.” Dos all the cooking and stuff. Rob says he definitely won’t be sleeping next to John for the first couple nights. He then turns his insight to Robert. He mentions that Robert is a big tough guy and he wants everyone to know it. “Probably got a little sausage.” Tammy? “Well she’s engaged, so there’s not much hope there.” And he says Zoe is real nice and most likely the toughest guy in the tribe.
Oh yeah, the part I was waiting for. I was real interested to see what the former Rotu members would think of Maraamu’s watering hole. Considering the beautiful waterfall at Camp Rotu, it’s safe to say that Kathy, Neleh and Paschal were a little disappointed with their little hole in the ground. On the walk Gina tells Neleh all about the Hunter thing and how the others are all lazy and that’s why they got rid of Hunter, yadda, yadda, yadda.
When we check back in with Rotu, we are treated to a whole bunch of shots of Sean, Rob and Vee carrying logs, picking up sticks, shoveling ash out of the fire, fixing the pig trap…basically doing more work in this couple hours then they’d done on the rest of their stay here. Sean is getting tired of the workaholics and Sean is feeling like “the master” is watching. While discussing how much they’re not liking the change, they mention that the women were better looking in their old tribe. This gets Rob to comment that he’s pretty sure that they’re in a tribe of 8 guys…well 8 guys and one girl, John. At the same time we hear a cut of Tammy saying that if they don’t feel like working, that’s just fine. The tribe will still feed them, but they’ll be the first to get the boot, guaranteed.
The next morning, the newly rejuvenated Maraamu tribe decides to go for a hike. In a questionable judgement call, they let Kathy lead. It doesn’t take long for them to get lost. Kathy barking orders and we can tell, as can Gina, that Paschal an Neleh are getting a little tired of Kathy and her barking of orders. On their way back, they happen upon a little brook. And what do they find in the little brook, but dozens of shrimp (you know, the candy of the sea) and decide that maybe they should catch some and have a tasty dinner treat later on. Well, while they’re catching shrimp, Sarah is sitting by herself doing absolutely nothing. Finally, she decides to go back to camp but she gets lost and has to come back and hang out with everyone else. All in all, the tribe made quite a haul on shrimp. Should be some good eatin’ at the Maraamu camp tonight.
In the continuing saga of Rob and Sean at Rotu camp, Sean has decided to stop working altogether. His attitude is that they are outnumbered 5-3 and that no matter how hard they work, any vote will go down tribal lines and they’ll get picked off one by one. So, if he’s gonna go down anyway, why bust his ass for these guys? Sean tried to have a similar conversation with Gabe, but gets himself so worked up that he pretty much verbally assaults Gabe by telling him he isn’t gonna do all this work and if they want to vote him off for it, so be it. Later we see the 3 former Maraamu talking and Vee lets the guys know that while she will always be with them, she wants no part of all the drama they seem to bring around them.
IMMUNITY CHALLENGE #4
Well, as we take a look at the tree mail, it seems we have a challenge centering around weaving. So, it’s not a seriously physical challenge. This is a good thing considering Maraamu is now all women and Paschal, the oldest person still on the island. Writer’s aside: While we know that the tribal switch was planned long before anyone got to the island, do you suppose they even thought about this possibility? I mean, in any kind of physical challenge, be it swimming, an obstacle course, rowing, anything really, Rotu has a huge advantage. Well, they had an advantage anyway, but now their advantage is insane. They should not lose another challenge it seems to me. Personally, I’d have thought they would have looked farther ahead on this one.
So, when the teams get to the challenge, it turns out there are 2 huge woven tapestries set up. However, they’re scrambled up. The idea of the challenge…make their tapestry look like the picture Jeff has displayed and win immunity. Sean, John and Rob sit out for Rotu an they’re off. Gabe takes control for Rotu and begins at the bottom of the picture. Things are progressing nicely for Rotu. Unfortunately for Maraamu, Kathy has once again taken the lead, and she’s leading them absolutely nowhere. They’re unorganized and have no idea how to get this thing started. Kathy gets to complaining that enough people aren’t helping, but it really doesn’t matter. Rotu had this one won as soon as they were able to sit Sean and Rob down and actually work as team again. The margin of victory was enormous and Maraamu gets to take the walk tonight.
PREPARING FOR TRIBAL COUNCIL
As we go back to Maraamu to prepare for Tribal Council…again…Gina admits that while she still hates TC, she is getting used to it. She’s worried again as the original Maraamu are outnumbered 3-2 in this tribe. Sarah seems to have given up. She’s not really talking to anyone, she’s doing no work and just seems like she has already resigned herself to the fact that she’s out the door tonight. She does mention that she’s going to vote for Kathy as she doesn’t want to hear her bark out orders anymore. Kathy sure is seeming awful confident leading up to TC. But in the back of her mind, she knows this could be the day.
TRIBAL COUNCIL #4
Well, first things first. Neleh, Paschal and Kathy have to light up their torches, since this is their first trip to TC. Jeff has a couple questions, but they’re all basically the same thing. “What was your reaction to the big switch?” Paschal goes first and says he was shocked by the development, but added that they’ve done good job taking care of the old man. Gina thinks the switch was awesome and that the switch day was the best day she’s had out there. She knows she was next to go. Neleh was really bummed about it but was very hopeful that some other Rotu would make the journey with her. Kathy was not happy at all to leave Rotu, mainly because of the strength and closeness of the tribe. Hoping though that the switch gave some new spirit to the Maraamu tribe. Well, it’s time to vote. They don’t show us anyone’s vote this time around, so we don’t even have a hint. I’ll go tally the votes.
Well, not surprisingly, the Rotu refused to turn cannibal on one of their own as all 3 of them plus Gina voted for Sarah. Sarah cast a lone vote for Kathy. And there you have it kids, another Survivor bites the dust. Please be sure to check out the voting history chart updated below. I added the new people to their new tribes and have tallied the votes that way.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
While Rob’s description on his new tribe-mates should win this award, it was simply too long to reprint and no part stuck out more than any other. However, to be fair, I did have to give the QOTW to Rob for another quote of his. While he and Sean were lifting logs all over the place, you hear Rob on a voiceover say, “Life over here is 2 degrees shy of Hell, absolutely terrible.” You’d think a construction worker would be a little more used to the whole manual labor thing. (He must be in a Union.)
JIM’S PREDICTION
Even though I didn't predict her in the S-Rating this week, I'm glad to see Sarah go. I had her at 75-1 to win in my preview, and if not for Rob, she'd have been gone a long time ago. So, finally, I have a prediction that was close to what happened. I still have some folks that I gave long odds to, but most of them are Rotu and frankly, who could have predicted a dominant performance like this.
Well kids, that seems to do it for this week. I appreciate you stopping by and certainly hope you come back for next week's exciting edition of Lost and Delirious. Until then, take care and God bless.
