Television Review: Leverage, "The Beantown Bailout Job"

TNT's con men with a conscience return for a second season, against the protestations of their unwilling leader, Nathan Ford (Timothy Hutton). Having disbanded at the end of the first season, our once ruthless band of rogues -- grifter Sophie Deveraux (Gina Bellman), hitter Eliot Spencer (Christian Kane), hacker Alec Hardison (Aldis Hodge), and thief Parker (Beth Riesgraf) -- find themselves unable to return to their former ways of being lone operators in crime. Helping people helped them, and it felt good (slightly cracked Parker even stole priceless treasures during the interim, only to break in and return them with nobody noticing).

Converging on Ford's new digs, they all have one thing in mind: getting the band back together, which they do in increments, all the while reassuring Ford that they aren't despite some of the more permanent remodels they make to his apartment.

The thing is, an opportunity has dropped itself almost literally into Ford's lap as he witnesses an automobile accident that may have been a failed hit attempt on a bank worker who has uncovered a subtle scheme to profit from Federal TARP funds. Reluctantly, Ford and company face down the Boston mob, setting up a double-sting that ensures justice will be served.

With all the fascinating intrigue of the best caper films and the action-levity of The A-Team, Leverage is a smart, fun hour of television that shouldn't be missed.

Leverage, "The Beantown Bailout Job," premieres Wednesday, July 15, 9pm|8pm Central on TNT.
