Lost and Delirious: Survivor: Marquesas - Episode 9: Almost, Almost Honest
by Chad Maddux
Published: April 26, 2002
Hello everyone. I'm Chad and welcome to my first Lost and Delirious. Jim is on vacation so I am filling in for him this week. I'm no stranger to Survivor, however. I did our first season of Survivor here at The Trades which was Survivor II: The Australian Outback. After one of the best Survivor episodes ever last week, tonight's follow-up is not as exciting but I am here none-the-less.
CANT YOU...FEEL A...BRAND NEW DAY
After voting John out and beating his alliance at their own game, Paschal, Neleh, Kathy, Sean and Vee celebrate at the waterfall. Sean leads the group in a round of singing as they celebrate rebirth of themselves and the game. Back at camp, the General and Tammy sit still trying to figure out what went wrong. Zoe, however, seems chipper as she tries to distance herself from her former alliance. The Fabulous Five are planning their day and want nothing but a day of fun. Tammy and Rob feel like outcasts as they sit...alone.
Paschal wants to be truthful and only wants the truth from the others. Tammy knows she is next and Rob will follow but Tammy is not giving up. Her allegiance is to Zoe and Rob but she is unclear what game Zoe is playing. So, Zoe and Tammy take a walk together and Zoe claims she never was a part of an alliance with John, Tammy, and Rob but Tammy does not believe her. Tammy wants Zoe to be straight with her so Zoe obliges. She has never liked Tammy and does not like anything about her, right down to her...eyes. Tammy changes her allegiance and has a short comment about Zoe. "Zoe's a bitch." They express their mutually distrust for one another and move on with their own games.
COCONUT, ANYONE?
Treemail brings news of the next reward challenge which involves coconuts...lots of coconuts. The survivors have been randomly paired off and will try to be the first team to fill a three-foot tall bamboo shoot to the top with coconut juice. They can gather coconuts from two places: the beach (where a few have been strewn around) or from the water (where a large batch in a net have been anchored down). The teams are Sean/Paschal, Tammy/Vecepia, Kathy/Robert and Zoe/Neleh.
This reward challenge brings a big reward. The winning team will receive a helicopter ride to a mountain top where they will then ride horses down the mountain to an authentic Marquesan feast. When the challenge starts, Vecepia and Neleh head for the coconuts on the beach while everyone else heads out to collect the group of coconuts from the water. Vee and Neleh manage to bring three coconuts each pack to their area but the others bring the dozen or so from the water. Then, they go to work cracking them open. Sean is the first to get a coconut open and quickly empties into his shoot. Rob is the last to return with his coconuts. Kathy is having trouble getting the coconuts open and Rob seems exhausted from his short swim. Neleh finally gets a coconut open and it is a juicy one. Paschal and Sean are leading with their shoot half-full with Neleh and Zoe close behind. Tammy and Vee are getting their coconuts open but are finding no juice. Sean and Paschal are running out of coconuts so, as Sean opens the remaining coconuts, Paschal goes to collect more. Sean gets a juicy coconut open and it fills the shoot close to the top. Kathy and Rob are close. One more coconut could do it but their next coconut is dry. Paschal comes back with more coconuts and after getting one open, he fills the remaining space in their shoot. Sean and Paschal have won their Marquesan feast. Jeff asks them about the unusual pair that won. They both respond the same way...
THE OLD MAN AND THE BROTHA
The next morning, everyone gathers to see Sean and Paschal off for their feast. They board the helicopter and, as it leaves, Vee is so happy for Sean and Paschal that she breaks down in tears. Paschal tells Sean during the ride that they are going to see this thing through to the end.
After being dropped off, they await the arrival of someone and finally, two Marquesan men ride up on horseback. Sean is timid around the horses and is reluctant to get on. Finally, the Marquesan man coaxes him on. The horses start snapping at each other and that is enough for Sean to want off. He decides to ride with one of the tribesmen instead. Sean and Pappy are greeted by drums and beautiful women. They are led to beach chairs with cushy pillows and are served a big coconut drink. Sean seems to be growing on Pappy. Pappy says that although he has his problems, Sean is honest. Both seem to be bonding.
After a tribal dance, the tribesmen show Sean and Pappy the roasted pig, goat, potatoes and plantains. Pappy is excited to be witnessing an authentic Marquesan ritual and to be on the history-rich South Pacific Island. Although they know they should pace themselves, they dive right in. To gain some favorable points with rest of the Soliantu Tribe, they sneak some food into their pockets. After finishing their meal, they dance with the Marquesans but their food-sneaking has created a problem. Pappy can't keep his pants on! His pockets are so full of food that his pants keep falling to his knees. All-in-all, Pappy and Sean had an unforgettable experience and bonded with each other. They shared a good cry at the end.
When they returned to camp, pockets laden with food, they met a hero's welcome. The rest of the tribe was more than appreciative when presented with the feast. Sean found the experience as a wonderful way to remember that although they are playing a game, there is a human side to it as well.
INSERT VERY POOR LYING HERE
Tammy and Rob decide that the only way to save themselves is by teaming up with Neleh and Paschal, a difficult task at best. They head out on a walk and the four sit down for a little chat. John and Tammy try to convince Pappy and Neleh that John was acting alone and that anything he said, it was without their knowledge or consent. Rob wanted them to believe he had never lied and does not want to be held accountable for John's actions. Writer's aside: Yeah, I have an aside too. Apparently Rob and Tammy thought they were talking to a couple of bricks but anyone who is not a complete moron could see through it. I'll bet even Vee (who isn't far from being a brick) could see through it. I didn't buy it. Pappy and Neleh didn't buy it. Rob and Tammy knew they did not believe them but Rob tried to convince the camera that he had never lied. Tammy asked Pappy and Neleh if they really wanted to be standing next to Sean and Vee in the end. Obviously, since Pappy has bonded with Sean, this did not go over well. He said he wanted to be with someone honest. Rob decided the meeting was over and left.
Back at camp, Rob is pouting...but he doesn't care. Grumpy? He says that is just who he is. He seems indifferent to what anyone thinks about his attitude. Zoe is fed up with Rob and Tammy. Zoe has made jewelry for everyone in a blatantly obvious attempt to win affection and distance herself from Tammy and Rob.
Treemail brings a big package: stilts. Obviously, the next immunity challenge will involve stilts so the tribe begins practicing. No one is very good but they all give it a shot. Tammy knows it's a do or die situation and watches everyone do poorly in practice. She takes the stilts away from the group and practices in secret. She wants to be very good for the challenge because she knows this is the most important immunity for her.
IMMUNITY CHALLENGE #9
The challenge this time is Marquesan stilt fighting, a head-to-head competition on stilts. Two people will compete and the last one on the stilts advances to the next round until there is only one. The matches have been pre-determined. Each survivor has a small platform from which they can mount their stilts.
Round 1
Robert vs. Vecepia: Rob manages to last about two seconds while Vee manages about 3 seconds, just edging out the General. Vee moves on to Round 2. They didn't get anywhere near each other.
Kathy vs. Paschal: Kathy literally puts her feet on the stilts and falls off. She did not even take a step. This one lasted about one second. Pappy wins and moves on.
Tammy vs. Neleh: Tammy shows that she practiced and practiced well. She is very well-balanced. Neleh manages about four steps and this one is the best fight so far. It lasts about six seconds but Neleh falls and Tammy moves on.
Sean vs. Zoe: Sean tries to take his first step but falls. Another short round. Zoe moves on.
Round 2
Vecepia vs. Paschal: They both start off well managing to take a few steps but Pappy loses his balance and falls. Vee wins and moves on to the finals.
Tammy vs. Zoe: Zoe tries to take a step but her legs bow and she falls quickly. Tammy moves on to the finals.
Round 3
Tammy vs. Vecepia: Tammy and Vecepia both stay on more than a few seconds. Tammy moves away from the platform but quickly stops. She decides to just balance instead of moving, making Vecepia come to her. Vee manages to move well but soon bobbles and falls before reaching Tammy. Tammy wins immunity for the second time in a row.
TRIBAL COUNCIL #9
At tribal council, John returns as a member of the jury with a smug look about him. Jeff starts with his questions by asking what it has been like being out there for an entire month. Sean answers that the hardest thing has been the lack of ability to talk with his mom. He never had a father so his mother made him into the man he is today. He chokes up. Next, the General says the last few days have been his days of reckoning. He has analyzed himself and analyzed others around him. He mentions one particular person who has been in denial of past actions and who are sucking up to the powers that be (all the while, the camera is shining brightly on Zoe). Next, Zoe says that she had trouble with the way she has conducted herself but she is still playing. She is still playing her game. Jeff offers Tammy the chance to give her immunity away to someone else. Not surprisingly, she hangs on to it like grim death. "No way in hell."
And finally, the vote. We see Zoe write down Rob's name. She says only, "Had enough." Then, we see Rob's vote for Zoe as well as Tammy's vote for Zoe. Now, the revealing. First vote revealed is for Zoe. The next vote is for Rob. Third vote is for Zoe. Fourth vote is for Zoe. Three-to-one for Zoe over Rob. Fifth vote is for Zoe. Sixth vote is for Zoe. Zoe becomes the next person voted out of Survivor in a unanimous vote. All seven votes (excluding her own) were for Zoe.
QUOTES OF THE WEEK
For the second week in a row, Sean gets the quote of the week but this week he gets two. I could not decide between the two so I just picked them both. First, while being greeted at the Marquesan feast by beautiful women and a crown of roses, he asks one of the young women, "What'chyu doin afterwards?" and then follows up with, "You're very pretty; little too young for me though." Secondly, when they first arrive at the feast, Sean says, "Ahh, this is better than Gilligan's Island."
CHAD'S PREDICTIONS
I am worried that Sean and Vee may make the final four. I very much dislike Sean and Vee is incredibly naive. It looks like Paschal and Neleh have a very strong chance of making the final four which is why I think they may take Sean and Vee along with them. I would like to see Kathy in the final four but I doubt she will make it. Tammy will be gone soon enough along with Rob. The immunity challenges will be important. Anything could happen. Anything.
As always the vote history chart has been updated for this week. Be sure to come back to The Trades next Monday when we'll publish our S-Ratings predictions for the next bootee. Jim will be back next week. Take care.
