This week’s episode of “Dinner for Five” focuses more on the sex and drugs than anything else. Only three guests arrive for the meal, with Michael Rapaport missing. While Marilyn Manson and Andy Dick know each other, it is pretty obvious that Daryl Hannah knows neither of the two. It is also never mentioned how Favreau knows Manson.
The intro for this week’s episode is the group discussing whom they should call to fill in the missing slot. Tim Curry, Tony Kaye, Tommy Lee, and Rick James are all mentioned, but no one is called.
spring time for Hitler As this section begins, the group is talking about Dick’s show on MTV. Hannah was under the belief that Dick was unable to get arrested when running around nude in New York. The topic soon evolves to talking about the Broadway production of “The Producers.” Manson reveals that he was invited to be involved in the 50th anniversary celebration on Broadway, as a part of “Spring Time for Hitler.”
curse of the jade scorpion The discussion is focused on what the group thinks of Woody Allen movies. Dick reveals his experience seeing “The Curse of the Jade Scorpion” in Spain. The theater was packed, and the audience was laughing ecstatically. Manson and Dick then agree that they both enjoy “Sweet and Lowdown,” and Favreau mentions he heard there was a lot of tension on the set between Sean Penn and Allen.
buñuel Manson reveals that his favorite director is the Spanish fetishist Luis Buñuel. Manson shares a brief synopsis of a film involving a young boy and his foot fetish. The conversation then touches on how is good acting distinguished when subtitles and dubbing are involved.
shrek Hannah reveals a rumor she heard about Blockbuster suffering financially due to DVD Sales and Direct TV ordering. Hannah says that “Shrek” was a winner for the rental company, and helped it gain back some momentum. Manson then reveals his infatuation with porn on Direct TV. He politely asks Hannah if the topic offends her, before discussing the details of his habit. Favreau then reveals that he had been recently in Las Vegas to attend the Adult Film Awards (AVN) as a reference for his latest re-writing gig (a romantic comedy entitled “Pornstar”).
blade runner This segment focuses on Hannah’s involvement in the film “Blade Runner.” Manson starts by mentioning some of his make up styling was a copy of her character. Hannah shares her experience trying out for her part, and how she doubted she would get the part. Favreau reveals that he had a crush on Hannah in that film. Discussion of Hannah’s collaborative experience on the set of “Blade Runner” then evolves into a brief mention of her indie release “Dancing at the Blue Iguana.”
petting zoo While this segment initially focuses on movies and music, it quickly turns into a gab session pertaining to the grossest strip clubs any of the group have been to. Dick shares about the oldest stripper he’s ever seen, while Manson mentions a club that is quite like a petting zoo (corrals and all). Favreau mentions his preference of topless in lieu of full nude. Manson wraps up the segment with a sly jab at his former fiancée’s (Rose McGowan) gold digging.
go tigers! Some brief discussion about Favreau’s roots in Chicago improv. Dick (who was from the same Chicago improv) discusses the success of his troop mates at the time. The discuss the begins to focus on a nearby Ohio high school football rivalry, and a documentary film “Go Tigers!” that had recently been released.
groupie Manson and Dick tell the story of the rockstar’s unreleased porn/indie film involving fan sex and strange fetishes.
shakespeare in love Manson admits to slipping pictures of naked men into a copy of Shakespeare in Love. The one crime he is willing to admit to.
wormwood The group’s last subject is what they use to inspire. Hannah likes to have jumbled words from magazines and newspapers read to her. Manson admits to a similar method, and his enjoyment of Absinthe. Dick prefers waiting until the second he is ready to go to sleep – and then writing down the last thought he has. While Favreau prefers writing as soon a he wakes up, and getting his mind focused on the task at hand, even if the writing is not at its best.
The show wraps with Hannah asking why the dinner group wasn’t really talking about indie film.
Commentary
My least favorite episode so far, it focused way too much on Manson, and not enough on film. And as soon as Manson stopped talking, Dick would chatter away. While I think it was an interesting group to gather together, its result was far from interesting. It almost felt like I was watching an episode of "The Howard Stern Show." Thankfully next weeks episode looks like a winner, as three great comedians square off. Not to worry, every series like this can have slip ups.
The show airs on Mondays at 8:00 pm on the Independent Film Channel.
