Book Review: Race Day (National Geographic Readers)
by R.J. Carter
Published: April 23, 2010
Race Day is a pre-reader book for kids from National Geographic. Which means that the opening paragraph to this review comes close to exceeding the word count of the book being reviewed itself.
Gail Tuchman's narrative may be a bit "Dick and Jane" but the likely focus for readers will be on the kaleidoscopic colors of the NASCAR vehicles and drivers that dominate each page (starting with Carl Edwards and the 99 Ford Fusion right there on the cover).
With short sentences and few words on each page ("Cars ZOOM on race day" is a phrase you'll get used to hearing quickly), those just starting to read won't be intimidated, and if they're race fans they'll be even more likely to be pulled in. As a supplement, the inside back cover contains instructions for a clap-rhythm chant, "Red Race Car" to the beat of "Miss Mary Mack."
