Eureka Gets Animated for Syfy Christmas
Television Review: Eureka, "Do You See What I See?"
by R.J. Carter
Published: December 5, 2011
Take one super-proton generator, three kids up past their bedtimes on Christmas Eve, and a Eureka special toy that creates holographic environments for children powered off the wrong kind of battery, and you'll get results that are very graphic -- even by Eureka standards.
All Sheriff Carter wants for Christmas is snow, and with Henry and Douglas' help, he'll generate it for his new family with the super proton generator. However, the unanticipated power surge that washes over the hidden community of super-geniuses results in the town and its people being converted into animated cartoons. Yes, it's unbelievable -- but this is Eureka, after all, and it's the Christmas episode, so you can expect appearances by the eccentric Taggart, not to mention the enigmatic Dr. Drummer!
As implausible and inconvenient as it might be to find yourself represented as a princess, a pull-string toy, or a bobblehead, what's the worst that could really happen? Would you believe giant ninja snowmen bent on mindlessly destroying everything in Eureka, and the rebellion of Sheriff Carter's jeep who decides he's had enough of being mistreated?
"Do You See What I See?" is an inventive, fun episode of the series which is already both things. It's a lighthearted poke at itself, with several styles of animation being used, from near-realistic CGI to classic Hanna-Barbera, to old school Rankin-Bass stop-motion and, finally, martial arts anime. And, in a sense, it also uses the animation to provide a little bit of character analysis -- if you want to read perhaps a bit too deeply into those kinds of things.
Syfy's Christmas week kicks off Tuesday, December 6, at 8pm ET|PT starting with Eureka.
