And so begins Sweeps.

The title “The Killer in Me” (7.13) was in reference to three characters: Spike, Willow, and Giles. Although Giles’ "killer" storyline was not as developed as the other two, his was important nonetheless as we finally got confirmation that he wasn’t the First Evil and that he is indeed corporeal. I hope this means someone hugs him next week. He looked very lonely and pensive out there in the desert and I’d like to see more expressions of love for our watcher. It was nice how he worried about leaving Buffy alone for a few days -- that is the Giles we know. Now hopefully we will learn more about what happened to him in England, all the way back in “Sleeper” (7.8). He’s kept it from the group all this time and so here's hoping we find out why.

And then there’s our Spike, whose chip began firing for no reason, causing him terrible pain, busting blood vessels, and worrying Buffy a lot. Some very sweet scenes shared between these two, as she worked fast to find answers to his problem. With the pain getting worse, the two ventured into the abandoned Initiative caves of Season Four where their duo flashlights in the dark reminded me very much of Mulder and Scully. In the caves, they were met by Initiative soldiers sent by Riley (whom she tried contacting earlier), who presented Buffy with a choice: remove Spike’s chip or repair it. The decision was hers. The episode ends without us knowing what she decides, but I think on some level we know. Her kneeling beside him, telling him “I’m right here” said everything.

A question though: when Buffy was battling that leftover demon, were the Initiative soldiers just watching in the shadows? I wonder because they certainly showed up fast after she defeated it. Was that a test or something? Or was that just timing? Lights flash on and boom, Buffy and Spike are surrounded.

Moving on, the principal character in this episode was Willow as she went through a terrible transformation that left her shaken:

“I don’t want you seeing me this way…”

She turned into Warren.

Her love for Tara was remembered, as her blossoming relationship with the very-forward Potential Kennedy took another step: sharing a kiss. Taking the form of Warren, Willow found herself reliving the moment when Tara died, feeling as if she was betraying her memory by liking someone else. It seemed as if her guilt transferred her outwardly into the person she hated the most. Of course we later learned that witch Amy had a little something to do with it too. In Willow's mind however, she equated her actions with that of Warren, and knowing what she did (to Warren) in "Villains" (6.20) stays with her.

Then Warren began to take control from the inside, thus another meaning of the title "The Killer in Me." She started to lose the fight, weak from her guilt. The episode ends with her speaking out loud to Tara, saying they should have been forever, and Kennedy closing the "fairy tale" with a kiss, breaking the spell in a way. The "killer" removed, Willow was left behind with her love for Tara still strong and a new connection with Kennedy begun.

Xander, Anya, and Dawn also had to deal with the “killer,” as they went out to the desert to confront Giles, thinking that perhaps he could be the First Evil -- which of course he was not. Andrew went with them too, and I suppose he is going to try his hardest to be part of all-things Scooby. Beg them until they let him come with. He is comic relief, but will he serve a bigger purpose? I don’t know. And if not, then why are the writers keeping him around? For the nerd jokes?

Some moments to remember: the touch-fest of Giles, Willow’s breakdown at the end, Spike’s chip firing, and Buffy and Spike discussing his present self. Much of this has to resurface in later episodes. Now, we need to know about Giles and that Bringer. What happened? About Spike and his chip. He’s had it for so long. And what the First Evil is planning to do next. So, much is there.

So much to come.
