Music Review: Evanescence, "Fallen"
by R.J. Carter Published: March 14, 2003
If you're one of the many people who found themselves repeatedly murmuring "Wake me up inside" after leaving the Daredevil Movie, then--whether you know it or not--you're already addicted to the hard-driving music of the group Evanescence, a band from central Arkansas that landed two songs--"Bring Me To Life" and "My Immortal"--on the superhero's soundtrack album; no mean feat, considering some of the competition also vying for a spot on the album.
The two soundtrack songs are poles apart in mood and tone but share equal footing in quality and effect, and of themselves ought to be enough to drive listeners to seek out more Evanescence. Fortunately, the group's debut album, Fallen, has just hit the stores, and features the two songs from Daredevil as well as nine other tracks that showcase the talent and range of this up-and-coming ensemble.
From such songs as "Going Under" and "Whisper" which manage to somehow blend the razor-like licks of Nine Inch Nails with vocals on par with Enya, to the disturbingly beautiful melodies of "Taking Over Me" and "My Last Breath," Fallen is a roller-coaster of an album that drives the body through alternating cycles of adrenaline and seratonin. After you've been lulled into a sense of security with the soft piano and lullaby sounds of Hello...
If I smile and don't believe
Soon I know I'll wake from this dream
Don't try to fix me I'm not broken
Hello. I'm the lie living for you so you can hide
Don't cry.
...you're then tossed into a postmodern techno introduction to My Last Breath...
Holding my last breath
Safe inside my self
Are all my thoughts of you
Sweet raptured light
It ends here tonight
...then pulled into a ghostly melding of guitars, arias and chanting in the (best-played-loudly) album finale, Whisper.
The vocals from lead singer Amy Lee have a siren-like quality not unlike those mythical ladies who lured ancient sailors to their deaths with their hypnotic calls. The angry guitars of Ben Moody and John LeCompt provide a unique contrast to the softer sounds of the vocals, and combined with the driving percussion from Rocky Gray, the overall result is a sound that is at once welcome and unearthly. This is a band that knows when to stand on a guitar and when to let up, which is something every good rock band should know how to do.
The group already has an official home page where fans can go to find out about tour schedules, order merchandise, or communicate with each other in the message forums. You can even find out what evanescence means, in case you thought it was just a cool sounding word the band made up.
Daredevil was the countdown. Fallen is the rumbling of the engines igniting. This is your final notice: Evanescence is a rocket in full take-off. Get on or get blasted.
