After months (and months) of waiting, the climax is here! Our heroes have faced off against the Martian invaders and encountered the strange beasts created by Dr. Moreau. They have retrieved from Moreau the one thing that can assure England victory over the unearthly monsters.
But they still have to deliver it, and they're running out of time. And thus begins the most entertaining bit of this chapter, as Edward Hyde takes the fight physically and directly to the invaders, with deadly consequence:
Mina: Oh no. Oh, that poor man...
Nemo: We... We cannot know what feelings our enemies have... but we may be certain, at least, that Hyde taught them terror.
Bond: And the fallen tripod is blocking the bridge! We've got them trapped!
And when all is said and done, I have to admit...
...it was all rather a bit of a let-down.
After months of speculation as to what Moreau could have concocted, the final revelation is almost banal. The invaders had everyone on the run for the first four issues, and now in issue six we find that artillery and incineration seems to have been working quite well in some places after all--although H-142 is still the key to the Martians' ultimate defeat.
Campion Bond is a mad-eyed stuttering shell of a man, the membership of the team quite dissolves, events that could have taken another six issues are wrapped up in one, and the feeling at the turning of the last page is one of overall disappointment.
Still, it had its moments, and for those we are grateful. And we know there will be a third volume of these adventures (some solicitations have already been seen) and we can hope that perhaps things may take a turn for the better with that one. Until then.
