It seems as if recording artists are taking more time than ever between issuing new studio releases. Fans craving new music from their favorite artists during these extended intervals can often satisfy their appetites with import CD singles. These imports almost always contain previously unreleased tracks or live versions of songs. Such is the case with the Evanescence import, “Everybody’s Fool”.

Besides the band’s latest single (as well as an instrumental version of it), the CD features two live tracks from Evanescence’s concert in Cologne, Germany. Both performances (“Taking Over Me” and “Whisper”) showcase the band’s great live sound and will encourage listeners to attend one of Evanescence’s concerts if they haven’t already done so. Amy Lee’s stellar vocals are the highlights of both tracks, proving that her voice is every bit as mesmerizing in person as it is on the studio album, “Fallen”. There is a serene, yet haunting quality to her voice that sets her apart from other female vocalists.

As far as the band’s single, “Everybody’s Fool”, is concerned, it is a song about the stinging betrayal of deception and the refusal to become blinded by deceit any longer. There is a defiance in Lee’s voice that gives the track a bold edge, and the song’s heavy drums and soaring guitars further enhance the strong sound. The band surely has another chart topping hit on their hands.

Partly because of Lee’s vocal talent, and partly because of their songs’ uncompromising lyrics, Evanescence brings an undeniably distinctive sound to their music. It no secret why they have become one of the hottest bands in rock music.

Overall Grade: A
