Reality Bites: Last Comic Standing 2 - The Final Six - Results
by Raul Burriel
Published: August 5, 2004
Hello again. My name is Raul and welcome to our recap of this week's results show. Just a reminder that your regular columnist, Molly, will be back next week for the Grand Finale of Last Comic Standing. In the meantime, I hope you will humor me and my bland prose.
On Tuesday night we saw the last six finalists competing for only three spots in next week's finale. Each comic had only 4 minutes to make a lasting impression - hopefully a good one - on the audience watching at home since they would be the ones voting. Tonight we find out who America likes best.
It seems that tonight we have more time on our hands than we did on Tuesday and Jay Mohr felt obliged to subject us to some of his comedy. It's always hit or miss with him. He told us about some dreams and took some digs at Clay Aiken and Paris Hilton. There's a couple of good chuckles here but, hey, he's already got tons of money. Let's get to the folks who are one gig away from living on the streets. The comics are announced. I notice they're dressed a lot more casually than on Tuesday night. Gary, notably, is wearing a tight pair of jeans and a t-shirt that's even tighter. Dude, if you'd worn that on Tuesday, you'd have made it through to the next round without having to tell even one joke. But then you'd have to contend with all the women shoving dollar bills into your pants.
So here's how they're going to do it. They're going to split the 6 comics into 3 groups of 2. Each of the pairs has one comic who made it through to the competition next week and one who hasn't. Well, OK. I guess they could have made it more complicated. OR MAYBE YOU CAN JUST TELL US WHO GOT THE MOST VOTES!
Group One: Gary Gulman and Tammy Pescatelli
Lots of cheers from the crowd (mostly the women) when Gary is announced. He's a hottie. More cheers when Tammy is announced. Is it cheers because this selection suggests Gary's going through? Or are they genuine cheers for Tammy? Tammy seems distressed to have been paired with Gary.
Oh, hey! A Staples commercial with Alice Cooper and his little girl brooding that she has to go back to school. Clever.
Before we move on, Gary and Tammy get to perform again. Oh, wait... on second glance, Gary's pants may be tighter than his t-shirt afterall. And the girls are noticing. He's not being judged on his material tonight so Gary's doing some of his old stuff (the self-adhesive stamp bit) and some new stuff (prisoners wear their pants low, apparently). Hey, what was that? Two minutes? Give the brother some time to build a real routine! Tammy did an entirely new routine about going to Iraq to entertain the troops with some Catholic jokes tossed in. Why's Tammy burning off new material? Does she feel she won't get a chance to use it next week?
Another commercial break and...
First comic advancing to the Final 3: Gary Gulman
Group Two: John Heffron and Kathleen Madigan
Whoa. Kathleen looks like she's ready to leave right now. Poor woman has to stand on stage for the next few minutes and then deliver a full routine, all while knowing that she's as good as gone.
Time for John to give us some of his goodness. He looks much more relaxed tonight in his dress-down outfit. He delivers a set of completely new (and solid) material. Kathleen follows with a fresh set, as well. Geez, if Kathleen had delivered this set on Tuesday, I think she'd have a better chance tonight.
No commercial break this time.
Second comic advancing to the Final 3: John Heffron
Group Three: Alonzo Bodden and Jay London
No secret here. Alonzo and Jay are the only two left. I'd like to have seen Alonzo's face when it was announced that John would be facing Kathleen, because he knew in that instant that he was being paired with Jay. And, funny as Alonzo was on Tuesday night, can anyone stop Jay London?
After the commercial break, we first get Jay London. Lots of cheers. People love him. Every "thank you" gets wild applause. The jokes are all new this time. The routine is familiar, though. He's weaker tonight than on Tuesday. But then, tonight isn't when it counts. Alonzo delivers a fresh routine all about sports. Solid material. Should he have bothered to save it for next week?
Commercial break time (but not before Jay Mohr teases us with almost announcing the winner).
Third comic advancing to the Final 3: Alonzo Bodden
Gee, Alonzo, maybe you shouldn't have burned off all that new material tonight! Well, I'm sorry to see Jay go. He's adorable. But I think America made the right choice. Gary, John and Alonzo - regardless of my comments on Tuesday (I watched Tuesday's episode a second time after writing my column and realized that Gary was head and shoulders funnier than Tammy) - were surely the three funniest comics this round. We have 2 hours of laughs on Tuesday. Let's hope they give the competitors more than 4 or 5 minutes to deliver their act. I feel they have the potential to deliver some really solid gut-busters but they have to build up to it.
Molly will be back on Tuesday to tell you all about it. Enjoy!
The finale airs on NBC on Tuesday at 8pm in most time zones. It's a 2 hour special so set your Tivos accordingly.
