It’s a fact of life that often times what initially seems like a bad situation can actually evolve into something quite positive. Such is the case with the dissolution of Creed. Although many fans were disappointed by the band’s break up, the end of Creed gave rise to the promising new band Alter Bridge. With the basic makeup of Alter Bridge consisting of former members of Creed minus Scott Stapp plus new lead singer Myles Kennedy, Alter Bridge has a solid foundation upon which to build.

The band’s first album, “One Day Remains”, displays the group’s instrumental experience and musical maturity. It is rare to find a debut album that has a sound as seasoned as “One Day Remains” does. The album contains many heavy hitting hard rock songs that feature screaming guitars and pounding drums, but the CD also has a more subdued side. On tracks such as the emotionally emotive, “In Loving Memory”, Alter Bridge displays their artistic range by slowing down the tempo while bringing a subtly intense introspection to their music.

However, it is the band’s current single, “Open Your Eyes”, that is the clear standout on the disc. Epic in scope but personal in message, the song is the perfect combination of Alter Bridge’s momentous rock and intellectual contemplation. Not only does the track have a strong hook, “Open Your Eyes” is also one of the most lyrically competent songs currently on the radio.

While some of the tracks simply aren’t as gripping as others, by and large, Alter Bridge’s first release is a mainly impressive achievement. Although Alter Bridge carries a different sound than Creed did, fans of Creed shouldn’t have any trouble falling in love with this album.

Overall Grade: B+
