Terra Rocks! Cover by Dave Bullock. (Warning: reviews at The Trades contain plot spoilers.)

There's a new Teen Titan, and she makes the earth move for Beast Boy.

Yes, it's Terra, the blonde beauty with elemental powers over dirt and rocks. Now, long-time Titans fans will remember that Terra was a plant on the team by their long-time enemy, Deathstroke, the Terminator. So it should be no surprise at all that after a boys-vs.-girls game of Capture the Flag, the Titans receive a challenge to discover a ticking time bomb delivered by none other than the one-eyed mercenary, sending the Titans to Jump City Stadium... and a trap:

Slade: Why, now it's time to welcome the Visiting Team...
Cyborg: Oh, so it's gonna be like that, huh?
Robin: No problem!
Beast Boy:: Growl!!!
Slade: I admire your confidence. But wait... Did you Titans think you would be playing the role of the Home Team? Oh, my dear children, that's not why I have brought you here.
Slade: You're here to... how shall I put this... ...be the ball!

Support The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Okay, so it's "Judas Contract" Lite, but that doesn't mean it's bad. In fact, it's quite good. This version is to the original as "Ender's Shadow" is to "Ender's Game"--a different look at the same thing.

The manga influenced artwork is starting to grow on me. I'm still a bit chagrined that these Titans apparently operate in a universe that precludes them from ever teaming up with their Justice League Unlimited counterparts, even Robin's mentor, Batman, but I'm willing to let that slide if I have to--and who knows, maybe they'll surprise me sometime with an unexpected crossover.

As it is, though, the Titans are fitting into the manga quite nicely. Torres is obviously having fun writing these stories, and it's contagious to the reader. Now that I expect the super-deformeds and the big eyes, I'm no longer distracted and can give the props to Nauck and Stucker that they deserve. And the Terra cover would be just about poster-perfect if it wasn't for the SD treatment given to the Titans in the background.

Terra has recriminations about her role
in Slade's deception.
And while we're giving props, here's a quick one to DC overall. Teen Titans Go is now one of several issues that features the new Johnny DC icon, indicating that the title is one that is suitable for all age groups. Kudos to a production decision that's been needed for a long time. (Let's carry it on to the other titles now, shall we?)

Recommendation: Easy Buy.
