Lost and Delirious: Survivor: Vanuatu - Episode 3

Hello good people and welcome back to the Lost and Delirious view of Week 3 of Survivor Vanuatu. After last week’s shocking vote, can the women pull it together or will they tear themselves apart? For the men, can they put another winning performance together and keep the women in a tailspin? We’ll find out and plus a whole lot more this week as we have been promised several twists.
LET THE BATTLES BEGIN
As we return to our merry bunch of chucklenuts, we see Yasur returning from Tribal Council with Eliza discussing how Dolly was blindsided by the vote. Funny, I don’t recall Dolly looking too surprised. After a bit of “What the…” from the Mia, Julie and Lisa we hear Mia say she doesn’t trust Eliza because of the switch and she can only trust Julie and Lisa. Blah, blah, blah and more blah.
Day 7 dawns at Lopevi and the shelter building is in high gear. Rory has disappeared and no one seems to miss him except for Sarge. Sarge says Rory is an individual and not a team player before telling Rory that he sees that Rory takes a lot of walks. This does not sit too well with Rory who confides in the audience that he is a grown man and does not take orders. Writers Aside: Why is this guy on Survivor? Does he not realize that individuality means certain death in this game? If he’s not careful Rory will be following Jeff’s order to leave the Tribal Council area immediately. At this point, let him wander into the volcano and never return. John P thinks he can turn Sarge to favor him because of the problems with Rory.
Back at Yasur, Twila is sharpening the machete while the rest of the sorority girls are discussing going hunting for food. Mia turns the talk to how others can say they don’t work and she says it conveniently loud enough that Twila can hear her. Ding Ding Ding – Fight’s on! Twila and Mia get in a war of words with gives us such classic lines as, “Shut up or I’ll whip your scrawny little ass” and “Keep playing the martyr card because it’s going to backfire”. Classic confrontation. The whole time Twila keeps sharpening the machete while Julie and Eliza sit quietly on the side and just observe the argument. Mia tells us she will continue to call Twila out and wants her gone. Twila just wants to “whoop her ass”. Writers Aside: I don’t know how many people are wishing Twila would whoop Mia’s butt but I know I’m one of them. Like Rory, this twit doesn’t know the first thing about playing this game. Not to mention arguing with someone who is sharpening a machete in their hand isn’t too bright in the first place. Mia acts more like a drill sergeant than Sarge does. Geez!
Next, we see Julie and Eliza conversing about Tribal Council as they head to get tree mail. On the trip back to camp, Mia and Lisa are waiting for them and they corner Eliza who says she voted for Dolly because she couldn’t trust her. Eliza more or less says she’s still with them as Mia orders her not to switch again. Lisa confides that she still doesn’t trust Eliza but she has a backup plan in her pocket. Tree mail reveals that, surprise, immunity is on the line again.
TWISTS, TWISTS AND MORE TWISTS
As the tribes arrive at the challenge, the men see that Dolly is gone as Sarge quips, “Barbie is gone.” The men seem dumbfounded that Dolly was the one that got the boot. Twist time! This is both a reward and immunity challenge. First, the two tribes will compete for reward. The winning tribe will then compete as individuals for immunity. Next twist, both tribes will go to tribal council and vote a tribe member. The only person that will be safe is the one who wins the individual immunity. To be clear, two people are going home tonight. The reward is fishing gear - a mask, Hawaiian spear, line and hooks. I can picture Rupert smiling at the sight of the spear. I wonder if anyone can use it like Rupert or will they be more like Rhyno from Pearl Islands. The reward challenge takes the tribes through three caged walls. At the first gate, you will untie a series of planks to get through the door. At the second, use grappling hooks to pull in three rings with keys. Use the keys on the locks to get through the wall. At the third, untie a series of interlocking planks until you can raise the section in the middle and climb through. First tribe to get all 8 members on the mat at the finish wins reward and a shot at individual immunity. The immunity necklace is also unveiled. Let’s go!
Lopevi quickly gets through the knots and removes the planks to get to the second wall. Finally, Yasur gets through and for some dumb reason they have Scout throwing one of the hooks and she failing badly. Lopevi has two keys quick before losing one of the grappling hooks. The women rally while the men retrieve the other hook. Mia is standing there whining at how bad Scout is doing as Lopevi gets their third key and moves to the final wall. As Yasur gets their third key and struggles with the locks, the men get the middle section open. Brady literally pulls the rest of the tribe through the wall as Lopevi wins the reward challenge before the women can get past the second wall. Lopevi wins the fishing gear and the chance for individual immunity. Writers Aside: It seems the challenges have evened up. I say this because last week I griped about the back-to-back balance beam competitions but the last two challenges seem to have favored the men.
With the women watching from the sidelines, the immunity challenge is explained as seven ladder rungs buried in the sand that has to be dug up and put together but each piece is unique. Dig up the pieces, put the ladder together and climb up to the top. Go! Chad and John K take quick leads as Bubba and Rory dig like kids on a beach. The women seem to be enjoying watching the men compete particularly Travis and his inability to dig a hole. Chad is the first to get all seven pieces with John K hot on his heels. Chad makes a critical mistake by not fitting the pieces in the right place as John K races past him and gets his ladder together and wins the individual immunity. Final Twist! John K will return with Yasur. He is going back to gather information for a very important decision. John will go to tribal council with Lopevi where he will be safe and one of the men is voted out. When Lopevi leaves, John will stay behind to give the immunity necklace to one of the women who will be safe from their vote. He is instructed not to discuss whom he is giving the immunity to before tribal council. The women’s minds begin spinning in like a roulette wheel with the ball about to drop as the two tribes head back to their beaches.
It’s now the afternoon of Day 7 as John K returns with Yasur and immediately wants to know who voted Dolly out which exposes the two factions. Eliza turns on the charm as she tries to explain that she is not part of an alliance and she only voted because Dolly was wishy-washy going into tribal council but she won’t shut up as John is trying to talk to the senior crowd. Mia, Julie and Lisa notice that Eliza won’t shut up which is cheering them up if Mia can ever be cheered up. John then tells us that Eliza seems really sweet but she just won’t shut up. Next, John gets to the youngins and asks who they want to vote off. Mia can’t say Twila or Eliza fast enough. No subtlety here. John could really care less who gets the necklace but he doesn’t want anyone mad at him because he may merge with them later in the game and wants them on his side. As John is talking to the youngins, Eliza interjects herself again and they tell John to ignore her and tell her to get lost. This doesn’t happen as John gets to witness Mia order Eliza not to vote for her tonight. Eliza wants to vote for Scout but no one else does. Why? At least Eliza sees that Scout is killing them in the challenges. Eliza then swears that she with them but no one is really buying it. With John watching from afar, Mia continues to run the Pink Ladies in a way that would make Rizzo proud. Mia tells us that she feels that it could be a tie vote but she doesn’t trust Eliza and with the immunity still to be decided then it’s all up in the air. Writers Aside: WOW! What a brilliant move by John! He’s at their beach for less than two minutes and he has the women voluntarily show him the divisions in the tribe. More amazingly, the women do it blindly. Apparently, I have greatly underestimated the mechanical bull operator. This goes down as one of the greatest moves in the history of Survivor in my book. Amazing!
Back at Lopevi, the men are stoked at winning again. John P feels that he is a dead man walking. Brady and JP want to turn Sarge and have him vote for Rory. Brady gets Sarge alone and lays it out for him. Sarge listens but doesn’t say much. Next, Sarge is telling Chris that he can’t stand being around Rory but Chris tells him that this isn’t the time to boot him. The sun begins to set and the men are headed to Tribal Council.
LOPEVI’S TRIBAL COUNCIL
The men come in and are reunited with John K. Jeff asks Chad how the tribe has changed and he says it has grown together and good teamwork. Brady is asked how perceptions of people have changed and he points out that Sarge is completely different that he first thought. The talk turns to John K and the afternoon over at Yasur. John says he divided them based on the Dolly vote to expose their alliances, which results in stunned looks from the rest of the men. Even Jeff looks amazed that John could dissect them so fast. After a round of several “Good Job” props, John says he is confident in his decision later tonight. As for the Lopevi vote, JP wants the tribe to be as strong as possible for the next challenge. Sarge says he is here to play the game. It’s time to vote and John K cannot be voted out. We see Chris vote for JP because of strategy. Brady votes for Rory to keep it simple. JP votes for Rory because he is the weakest. Chad votes for JP because of strategy. When Jeff tallies the votes, the old alliance has held and JP is voted out by a 5-3 vote. Jeff says they’ve told him they voted out to make the tribe stronger but they’ve voted two of their strongest members. Interesting strategy. We’ll see if it works. Grab your torches and head back to camp. John K stays behind for the Yasur tribal council. Writers Aside: I’m a little puzzled at this vote. Yes, the Seniors can now boot Rory and still have the numbers advantage but Rory is a cancer on this tribe. At least JP was trying to fit in with everyone while Rory seemed to ticking everyone off.
YASUR TRIBAL COUNCIL
After the women come in, John is told to award the necklace. He gets up and puts it on Ami’s neck. He explains that he put it on her because he feels she was safe and how the vote goes will be the way it would have been in the first place. He feels that this may help them figure out what kind of tribe they want to be because they are two tribes right now. Jeff then tells John to grab his torch and go back to Lopevi. Again, John shows how intelligent he is in the game although he may have gone too far with his comment about two tribes in one. We’ll see.
Ami is shocked. She thought he would save someone on the block. Jeff then asks Scout what happened after the vote last night. Scout explains the argument between Mia and Twila wasn’t about the vote but rather the comments Twila said about the amount of work that everyone was doing at camp. Mia and Twila then try to explain their sides but neither can get much said before the other cuts them off and Cat Fight 2 begins in earnest. Finally, Twila gets it out that she is a tomboy and has always gotten along better with men rather than women. She doesn’t know how to act around them. Jeff asks Julie what she thinks about the situation and Julie points out that Twila has never given the younger girls a chance. She has never tried to talk to any of them or get to know them. Twila says they haven’t given her a chance and they roll their eyes at her when she comes around. Twila says don’t judge until you’ve walked in my shoes. At his point, Ami has heard enough and stands up for the young girls asking if Twila has tried to walk in their shoes. Twila says no. Ami says this is her chance and gives her a few examples of how to break the ice. Twila laughs it off and says she can try that but it doesn’t sound very convincing. Writers Aside: Oh my, another great move in the game. Ami picked just the right moment to interject herself and show to the youngins left behind that she is not necessarily tight with the older bunch. Asking Twila if she had thought about what it was like for the Sorority girls showed she is trying to keep herself in the middle here. Perfect timing for a perfect move and it seemed to lighten a tense situation. What is the vote based on? Scout says to maintain a healthy emotional attitude in camp. Mia can’t keep her trap shut saying she feels Scout is pointing her out but doesn’t feel she is causing emotional distress. She feels Scout is dwelling on the fight rather than the health of the tribe. Eliza agrees with Scout but wants to keep everyone around. We see Mia vote for Twila because she says Twila admitted she can’t relate to women but she is stuck on an all-woman tribe and doesn’t want to be around her anymore. Scout votes for Mia because her volcano erupts more than she likes. Twila votes for Mia citing the big chip on her shoulder and she needs to go home. Eliza votes for Twila saying she has an amazing work ethic but she can’t be here anymore. When the votes are read, Mia is sent home by a 5-3 vote. Lisa turned on them. Eliza and Julie are about to cry while Lisa will not look at them. After Mia takes her deserved walk of shame, Jeff wonders if tonight’s vote lets this tribe become the strong group of women with emotional harmony that they desire to be. Ami is told to leave the necklace behind as the tribe grabs their torches to head back to camp.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
Unlike last week, there are multitudes of comments that could fall here but Scout’s comments when casting her vote for Mia had me laughing out loud. “Mia, your volcano erupts too much for my taste. Good luck in finding a husband who will put up with you.”
Now we are starting to see the personalities come out. At Yasur, Ami is proving to be the one that is quietly controlling the game even though the other women may not see it. Julie, Lisa and Leann are still somewhat of a mystery because they don’t say much. Now that Mia the Ruler is gone, we’ll see how this affects the attitudes of the rest of the tribe. At Lopevi, Sarge is being shown as the leader but don’t discount Chad. Chad is in the same category with Ami for staying quiet and only speaking when necessary. Sarge needs to cool it a bit with Rory but now that the numbers still favor the Senior Circuit, it may be Rory headed to the Losers Lodge next. Next week, Brady tries to catch some fish and more at cat fights from the women. Be sure to sharpen your claws. Until then, take care and God Bless.
