Interview: Butterfly Boucher

Published: October 21, 2004
Over the years, Australia has proven to be an abundant source of talented entertainers. Their latest contribution to the music world is Butterfly Boucher (yes, that is her real name). The spunky, upbeat recording artist’s music mixes a pop sound with a distinctly refreshing rock edge, separating her from the derivative style of many of today’s pop divas. Her first single, “Another White Dash”, personifies her strong and insightful sound. “I think, in general, American radio tends to want something a little bit rockier,” she says as she explains the concept behind her style of her debut single. “Another White Dash was a standout track, and a couple of people over the label felt really strongly that that was the song to go with (as the first single), so that’s what ended up happening.”
Being part of Grammy winner Sarah McLachlan’s North American tour was a huge boost to Boucher’s career. On the tour, many people were exposed to her music for the first time, and their responses were resoundingly positive. “I had some really good crowds on the Sarah tour,” she recalls. “One outstanding crowd was in Montreal. Another was in Milwaukee. That was a fantastic crowd.”
Now that McLachlan’s tour has ended, Boucher is back to traveling the country solo. Although she is currently playing at many clubs and small venues across the nation, she hopes to once again experience the excitement of performing in front of sold out arenas. “Playing in clubs is quite a shock to the system after having done arenas, but it’s also what I’m used to,” she says. “I really enjoyed doing the arenas. There’s just something exciting about having that many people hearing you. I really enjoyed that. I found it quite addictive. At the same time, I’m really enjoying the more intimate setting of the club tour as well. I think they both serve a purpose.”
While Boucher craves the thrill of performing in front of a live audience, she still values her time in the studio. “I’m enjoying performing live more and more,” she remarks, “but I’ve always been most at home in the studio, creating from scratch. That’s what I love doing.”
Perhaps part of Boucher’s success can be attributed to her artistically oriented background. From an early age, her family strongly encouraged her to pursue her musical skills, especially her father, who once played with AC/DC. “I doubt I would be here if it wasn’t for being encouraged at such a young age,” she tells me. “I’ve learned a lot from watching my dad go through the music industry. I’ve been completely lucky in that sense that most kids have parents that basically say that it’s nice to have music as a hobby, but you need a job to pay rent. And I just didn’t have that at all. I didn’t have money either [laughs]. My mom and dad were very serious about music and art as a lifestyle.”
Boucher’s parents are clearly proud of the bold and exemplary path their daughter has blazed for herself. Amongst the high level of competition in the recording industry, Boucher’s desire to achieve greatness, coupled with the long overdue backing of a major label, leaves little doubt that Butterfly Boucher will soar to stardom.
