Interview: Christopher Meloni
by Scott Juba
Published: March 8, 2005

Christopher Meloni is in a position that many actors envy. He is one of the leading stars of the highly rated TV show, “Law and Order: SVU”, a series whose already impressive popularity seems to grow stronger with each episode. When asked why all of the “Law and Order” series have enjoyed such longevity, Meloni responds, “They all stick to a pretty similar formula. Crime is one of the leads of the show. If there’s ever anything that deals with a character’s personal life, you don’t have to worry about it getting too crazy. People don’t have to worry about character arcs. Each episode is a self-contained unit.” He adds, “You can watch any episode you want and have a compelling story being told.”
Meloni’s character, Detective Elliot Stabler, is a seasoned cop that has spent many years on the force. While Meloni acknowledges that he and Stabler’s personalities overlap in some areas, he points out that he and his character also share differences. “I don’t think I’m as much of a hard ass as Stabler,” Meloni comments. “I think I’m a little more liberal, and I don’t have as many children. I’m also not as pressurized as Stabler is.”
Prior to acting, Meloni worked in construction, which makes him appreciate his current acting success all the more. He remarks, however, that acting brings its own unique set of challenges. “When it’s mid-February, and it’s bitterly cold outside, I am really glad that I’m not working in construction anymore,” he tells me. “But on the other side of it, when you go out and have to use an office building to shoot a scene, to me, it’s just as painful to be under fluorescent lights all day long.”
When Meloni’s not busy acting, his love of traveling takes him across the globe. “I’d have to say Bali’s my favorite place that I’ve visited,” he says. “It’s a culture that has its own rhythm. On a whole, they’re cool people. I dug their vibe.”
Television audiences seem to be digging Meloni’s vibe, because “Law and Order: SVU’s” ratings continue to rise. “All aspects of life that I look around, I’m very thankful to be standing where I am,” he remarks. And Meloni certainly has reason to be thankful. In one of the most competitive industries in the world, his type of success is rare and deserves to be appreciated.
