The Accidental Columnist: The Amazing Race 7 - Episode 2

Welcome back kids! It's leg number 2 and Team BFF Debbie and Bianca are first to leave the Pit Stop at 10:54 p.m. Teams must travel 400 miles by bus to Arequipa, Peru, also known as the white city, and find the shoe shine union.
At the bus station, teams have agreed to buy tickets in the order they arrive, but Survivors Rob and Amber learn that a later bus actually arrives in Arequipa an hour earlier than the bus the other teams are planning to take. The Survivors only tell On/Off Couple Ray and Deana and Married Couple Uchenna and Joyce about this faster route. Ooh, an alliance.
Supposedly, Romber also asked a security guard not to tell the other teams about the faster bus. A gay guy tries to get information from the guard, but the guard keeps his word and won't talk (though he does point out Rob as the culprit). The other teams confront Rob about the treachery and his plan is foiled. All teams head to the white city in the same, later bus.
On the bus, the friendly Bar Brothers make friends with Blonde Roomies Megan and Heidi. Meanwhile in the front of the bus, Married Parents, On/Off Daters, Romber and Patriots Ron and Kelly each pitch in five bucks to bribe the bus driver into only opening the front door. It works (and Rob actually just pockets his five bucks) and the four teams get a head start as they race out of the bus while the other teams are left wondering why the back door won't open.
ROADBLOCK
At the shoe shine union the clue is a Roadblock. Like last year, one person from each team can't do more than six. For the race's first Roadblock, one team member must pick a shoe shiner and go out to the streets to shine five pairs of shoes.
Ron and Kelly, Ray and Deana and Rob and Amber are done first. No surprise, first off the bus, first done with the task.
As teams finish, they are awarded tickets onto two different flights (leaving 45 minutes apart) to Sanitiago, Chile. Once landed, teams must head to a statue of the Virgin Mary. Here's the flight breakdown:
| Flight 1 | Flight 2 |
Ron and Kelly | Megan and Heide |
| Rob and Amber | Uchenna and Joyce |
| Ray and Deana | Debbie and Bianca |
|
| Susan and Patrick | Brian and Greg |
| Meredith and Gretchen | Lynn and Alex |
Romber arrives to the statue first, followed closely by the Patriots. The Mother/Son duo is stuck in traffic. That kid freaks out way too much. When they arrive, however, they don't have enough money to get in to see the statue. They're forced to exchange money on the street or beg. Luckily (for them, not me) they find an American who trades them for foreign currency.
DETOUR
It's a Detour! This week it's either Shop or Schlep. In Shop, teams travel two miles to a restaurant to pick up a recipe from a chef and then head to a market to buy the recipe's five ingredients. In Schlep, teams travel two miles to a book dealer and load up 180 books onto a dolly and carry them eight blocks to the Library of Congress. Get ready for that Detour breakdown:
| Shop | Schlep |
Meredith and Gretchen | Rob and Amber |
| Susan and Patrick | Ron and Kelly |
| Lynn and Alex | Ray and Deana |
|
| Uchenna and Joyce | Debbie and Bianca |
| Megan and Heidi | Brian and Greg |
Rob uses his construction knowledge to efficiently stack all 180 books onto the dolly. His buddies the Patriots, however, get antsy and head off to the library with only half the load.
The Patriots get a little lost on the way to the library and Romber delivers the books first. And all of them at that. They must now head to Cerro Santa Lucia and find the statue of Neptune or face possible elimination. Yes, that's right, it's already time for the Pit Stop. Seems early doesn't it? Rob and Amber slide easily into first place.
WHAT ABOUT SECOND?
Old Folks Meredith and Gretchen try to buy their first ingredient -- the fish -- but they don't have enough money. Rob was right, this task will get expensive. The fish monger caves and sells the Old Folks fish for a little less money and Meredith and Gretchen carry on.
The Patriots go back for a second load of books and arrive at the Pit Stop in time to take second place (monster comeback this week!).
Meanwhile, the shoppers are having a hell of a time. Mother/Son are out of money again. They trade a flower for some quick cash. The Boyfriends Lynn and Alex, however, are able to score a lot of vegetables for free just by asking nicely.
The Old Folks return to the chef with all their ingredients, but the fish doesn't weigh enough! They have to go back! It's the same for the Boyfriends. Married Couple, however, has enough.
The Boyfriends demand more fish from the monger without pay and they are yelled right out of the market. Yeah, you have to watch out for the rigged scales. Keep an eye out for that wandering thumb.
And for last place this week, it's a close race between the stack-a-matic Bar Brothers and the shopping Blonde Roomies. So close in fact that both cabs pull up to the Pit Stop at the exact same time. And the loser? It's the Blonde Roomies Megan and Heidi. No great loss, they were pretty dull. Well, that's my opinion at least, the Brothers are pretty upset about it, though.
