DVD Review: Hardy Boys / Nancy Drew Mysteries Season One
by R.J. Carter Published: March 27, 2005
Shaun Cassidy, Pamela Sue Martin,
and Parker Stevenson
Long before Mystery, Inc. began tooling around the country with a talking Great Dane and a flowered van, teenagers were solving crimes in literature. Chief among them were Frank and Joe Hardy, and Carolyn Keene's Nancy Drew (although I found myself more drawn to Danny Dunn and Encyclopedia Brown.)
In the 1970s, these adolescent sleuths gained another level of fame by making the transition to television. The result was a teen idol phenomenon that had kids glued to their sets, buying lunchboxes, hanging up Dynamite posters of the stars, and making a pop music hit of Shaun Cassidy's "Da Doo Ron Ron."
A common theme of the stories is the seeming supernatural aspects of the mysteries: a haunted house; hex signs in Massachussetts; ancient Chinese artifacts. And while their friends are losing their wits, our heroes follow the path of logic and reason, putting superstitions to bed and apprehending culprits, usually without the assistance of police who often believe the detectives more of a nuisance than an asset.
Now Universal has released this first seaon of "The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries" in a two-disk collection: one disk of seven episodes for the Hardy Boys, one disk of seven episodes for Nancy Drew. Each disk is double-sided, which I don't particularly care for, but I suppose it saved cost to the consumer. There is no liner insert save for an advertisement foldout in the Nancy Drew box for upcoming television series on DVD, and a quad-fold poster in the Hardy Boys box of Parker Stevenson and Shaun Cassidy posing for Dynamite Magazine, which was a nice bonus for those who remember hanging such items in their school lockers.
Previews on this DVD set include upcoming boxed sets for the second season sets of "The A-Team," "Magnum P.I." and "Knight Rider," as well as the first season of "Miami Vice," USA Network's premiere of "Kojak" and the DVD release of "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason."
There are no special features on this boxed set other than the ability to subtitle in English, Spanish or French. One nice feature of the menus (where a fingerprint marks your current selection) is that when you select an episode, you are presented with a paragraph synopsis of the episode preparing to play, much like the first two seasons of "Everybody Loves Raymond." It would have been nice to have brought the cast back together for some commentary on the episodes, though.
