The Accidental Columnist: The Amazing Race 7 - Episodes 5 and 6
by Dan Weltin
Published: March 30, 2005
Welcome to The Amazing Race's two-hour extravaganza! We have a lot to get to, so let's
jump right in. Survivor's Rob and Amber kick things off with a 3:00 a.m. departure.
Teams must fly to Johannesburg, South Africa where their next clue is waiting for them in a marked car. All teams depart on the same flight, killing Romber's 8-hour lead.
Some teams were forced to check their gigantic backpacks and somehow Off/On Daters Ray and Deanna wound up in first class (I thought that was against the rules?).
FAST FORWARD AND DETOUR
Once on the ground, teams can either choose a Fast Forward (this is the first of two and whoever completes it first gets to head straight to the Pit Stop) or the Detour.
Survivors and Off/On Daters choose to duke it out for the Fast Forward. For this Fast Forward, teams head to a cooling station where they'll have to walk across a suspension bridge over one of the towers.
Detour choices this week are Tunnels or Tribes. In Tunnels, teams climb down 45 feet into a cavern to find the clue. In Tribes, teams head to a cultural center and match five items to five different tribes.
Boyfriends Lynn and Alex are the only team to initially choose Tribes. Everyone else thinks crawling around some tunnels will be faster.
Married Couple Joyce and Uchenna were forced to check their bags and get stuck at baggage claim. This slows them down a bit, but they waste even more time buying a map.
Romber gets lost on the way to the Fast Forward and Off/On Daters arrive first. Rob and Amber argue whether to stick around hoping that Ray and Deanna won't complete the Fast Forward. Rob wants Amber to make a decision to stay or go, but lucky for her she doesn't have to. Off/On Daters make it across and get the privilege of heading to Soweto Overlook, the Pit Stop.
So, Romber heads over to the cultural center, but gets lost on the way. They stop at a hospital for directions and are immediately recognized. The nurses give them hugs and good directions.
ROADBLOCK
Meanwhile in the caves, Patriots Ron and Kelly walk past the clue on the way out allowing Brothers Brian and Greg to find it first. They tell the Patriots where to find the clue and in return, the Patriots tell the Brothers how to get out.
Teams now drive to the Soweto market and the Roadblock. In this Roadblock one member of each team must search the market and purchase five items for a local orphanage.
Married Couple Uchenna and Joyce and Old Folks Meredith and Gretchen get lost in the caves while Rob and Amber speed through the Tribal match game.
Oh no! Meredith and Gretchen exit the caves thinking that the clue will be given to them outside. Disheartened, they head back down…and as we saw in the commercials, Gretchen falls. She's cut and bloody, but it's not that bad. She only requires one stitch. She sends Meredith on to find the clue.
The Patriots meanwhile finish the Roadblock first and the Brothers are right behind. Teams now deliver the items to the children's home five miles away and pick up their clue. Then it's on to the Pit Stop where Ron and Deanna are waiting.
Amber meets a fan in the market who helps her shop. She even gets in their car and helps them find the orphanage. Best moment is when the fan spots Rob and giddily cries out "It's Boston Rob -- I'm so excited!" She then directs them to the Pit Stop. Quite the fan.
Old Folks are clearly in last place, but wait! It's a non-elimination leg!! They lose all their money and (new this season) they must turn in their backpacks and possessions as well. They'll literally only have the clothes on their back.
Here's the leaderboard before we head to the next episode:
| 1st Place | Off/On Daters Ray and Deanna |
| 2nd Place | Patriots Ron and Kelly |
| 3rd Place | Brothers Brian and Greg |
| 4th Place | Boyfriends Lynn and Alex |
| 5th Place | Survivors Rob and Amber |
| 6th Place | Married Parents Uchenna and Joyce |
| 7th Place | Old Folks Meredith and Gretchen |
EPISODE 7.6
Okay, for some reason, CBS wants to show us two episodes tonight. Teams head to the
Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve to feed some lions on one of two shuttles. Shuttles are one hour apart. Here's who signed on for what:
Here's the breakdown:
| 8:00 | 9:00 |
Deanna and Ray | Lynn and Alex |
| Ron and Kelly | Rob and Amber |
| Brian and Greg | Meredith and Gretchen |
|
| | Uchenna and Joyce |
Uchenna and Joyce gave Meredith and Gretchen some clothes to wear and the Old Folks ask the other teams for money. Romber and the Off/On Daters don't give them any, however.
After feeding the lions, teams fly to Bottswana and travel by train, then bus, to a giant aardvark statue in the African Bush.
Boyfriends, Romber and Old Folks head the wrong way, but Uchenna and Joyce follow their own map and get to the airport in time to make an earlier flight with the leading three teams. The other three teams who got lost will be stuck on the same flight together (despite the Boyfriends getting lost again en route to the airport).
Once the second plane lands, the Boyfriends refuse to let Rob and Amber on to their minibus. I don't think it's a wise move to piss off the Robfather. Expect some reparations.
Luckily for the stragglers, the train doesn't leave until 9:00 p.m., so all teams will depart together.
ROADBLOCK #2
All teams arrive at the statue together and start the Roadblock together. For this Roadblock, one member from each team must throw a spear 20 feet and hit a moving target. Once done, teams must drive across the Bush to Xua Xarra.
The Brothers finish first, but the Patriots are so close behind that they pull away in their jeep first.
Rob and Amber are the last team to finish the Roadblock, but Uchenna and Joyce can't remember where they put down their bags. Romber then proceeds to pass Old Folks and Off/On Daters.
The Brothers are driving pretty fast and in an effort to steer back onto the road, they wipe out on some sand and crash their vehicle! Brian and Greg are both okay, but their cameraman is hurt. They must wait for a replacement jeep before they can move on.
The Boyfriends pullover to make sure everyone is alright, but Rob and Amber drive right on by. Other teams slow down, but the Brothers wave them on.
DETOUR
The clue at Xua Xarra is the Detour. Teams either choose Food or Water. In Food teams grind corn enough corn to fill a basket. But the corn must be grinded to a specific consistency. In Water, teams use a reed straw to suck water from an underground spring and fill up 12 ostrich eggs. They must then bury the eggs in the sand.
Romber chooses Water while Patriots, Boyfriends, Old Folks, Married Couple and Off/On Daters choose Food. Grinding the corn is harder than it looks. The Patriots finish the Detour first, but Rob and Amber sail through the Water challenge.
Now it’s a drive to the Pit Stop, which is actually just a cot in the middle of the desert.
The Patriots and Survivors are head to head, but Romber drops their gear when they exit their vehicle, thus allowing Ron and Kelly to take first. Phil makes Rob and Amber feel guilty about not stopping at the car accident and when the Boyfriends arrive in fourth, they say they would have been in second if they hadn't helped the crashed car -- okay, time out. Yes, it was very nice that they stopped. It was definitely the right thing to do, but they didn't help. They just stopped and got out. Who's to say they would have been in second? They took a long time at the Detour. Alright, I've said my peace.
With only two teams left at the Detour, the Brothers arrive. Since the other teams are doing Food, they try Water. It turns out to be a smart choice because they finish at the same time Off/On Daters do. It becomes a foot race between these two for sixth place and in a mad sprint the Brothers pull it out. Ray and Deanna go from first to worst and are eliminated. Boo hoo.
