Seed of Chucky - Unrated
|
Having never seen a movie featuring the puppet Chucky, I was wary about the quality of this movie. I've seen plenty of horror movies and I tend to dislike the endless group of sequels that terrorized audiences in the 1980s & 90s. Fortunately, I was surprised by the exceptional sense of humor found within this film.
Overall, there is no doubt that this movie is a low budget B-movie. However, despite that fact, "Seed of Chucky" takes the low road and stays strong as a comedy. While there is plenty of blood spewed about, there is rarely a gory scene lacking a chuckle inducing moment. The responsibility for these laughs is not left to the puppets alone, the human cast has its own share of great and ridiculous lines of dialogue.
The plot for this movie is inconsequential and has major holes at random spots. But no one rents or buys a movie like this for its Oscar moments. This is a fun romp of a flick that's going to be fun with a group of friends and a keg.
The voice acting is mediocre for Tiffany and Chucky, not really adding much more than some campy effort. Billy Boyd (of "The Lord of the Rings" fame) does an excellent job voicing Glen(da) and makes the beginning of the movie worth watching. For the live action performances, Jennifer Tilly plays herself well enough and easily out acts Redman. The supporting performance from Hannah Spearritt is actually a wonderful surprise. I'll be sure to look for her roles in the future (as long as it isn't another "Cody Banks" sequel).
For the film itself, I'll score "Seed of Chucky" as a B-. Keep in mind that some of the most entertaining movies aren't always the most highly graded.
On the DVD front, this disc is filled with features. Released by Rogue Pictures, this disc has hours of extra entertainment for the die hard Chucky fan as well as the bored DVD renter. I particularly enjoyed the origin of Chucky documentary because it filled in some of the gaps that existed in my Chucky knowledge. It wasn't a short feature, but it wasn't ridiculously long either.
I also watched the film with the Jennifer Tilly & Don Mancini commentary on. The commentary is not one of the best I've heard, but perhaps I am just on Jennifer Tilly overload. The trivia track, kind of a DVD version of Pop-Up Video, is more entertaining and a great complement for someone who has already seen the movie in theaters.
