Fifty cars. Four days. Nicolas Cage stars as Randall 'Memphis' Raines in "Gone in 60 Seconds." Memphis is a retired car thief, a legend. His younger brother, Kip, tries to follow in big brother's footsteps. Kip takes a job that gives him two weeks to steal fifty cars. After stealing barely a dozen, the police find his warehouse and impound his stolen, high-end loot. The gang gets away, but they must start from the top of the list. Memphis is forced to come out of retirement with just four days to steal every car on the list.
This is definitely a guy-film and a great one at that: hot cars, explosions, and Angelina Jolie wearing bright red lipstick. The vehicles in "Gone in 60 Seconds" are amazing. The acting is just mediocre. (My favorite example of the mediocre acting is Angelina Jolie's quivering lip at the mere possibility of Memphis being injured or killed.)The film moves at quick pace throughout which results in very few dull moments. It's not all action; there are several great comedic scenes smoothly incorporated (be on the lookout for the misadventures of Johnny B). Overall, the film will never top AFI's list but it provides plenty of entertainment and makes a great addition to any growing DVD collection.
Bonus Material
The bonus features included with this edition definitely add some entertainment value. There are plenty of stunts in the film and the extras provide a glimpse of the enormous effort needed to pull off seemingly routine stunts. Several stunt techniques are explained in significant detail. Surprisingly, Nicolas Cage, a car buff, did most of his own stunts in the film after producers sent him to several training seminars.
As with any bonus material, there is plenty of talking. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer does most of it with director Dominic Sena coming in second. In "Stars on the Move," most of the actors are given the opportunity to talk about their character, even if only for 1-2 minutes each. Some of the bonus material was very disappointing. For example, the second bonus feature, "Action Overload," was a dull, 90-second clip-show of chases and crashes.
"A Conversation with Jerry Bruckheimer" gives a glimpse into the job of a producer. The featurette looks at some of Bruckheimer's other films including "The Rock" and "Con Air," providing some additional behind-the-scenes takes. The theatrical trailer and a great music video from The Cult round out the offerings. Overall, the bonus material is fairly standardized.
The film is presented on this DVD in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound in Widescreen (2.35:1). A French language track and French and Spanish subtitles are also available.
