For most actors, it takes years of experience before they find a home at a quality talent agency. Daniel Sunjata, on the other hand, drew the attention of his agent while he was still in college at NYU. Therefore, it’s no wonder why Sunjata’s had so many quality roles during his brief career as an actor. He’s made guest starring appearances on “Law and Order: SVU,” “Sex and the City,” and “DC,” and had a supporting role in Woody Allen’s “Melinda and Melinda.”

Sunjata currently stars on the acclaimed firefighter drama, “Rescue Me,” as Franco, one of the firehouse’s younger members. “To my knowledge, there’s no other show on television that addresses the psychological post 9/11 traumatic stress from the standpoint of the people who lived through the experience,” Sunjata remarks, “and that’s really the thematic underpinning of Rescue Me. The show’s very socially relevant”.

“Rescue Me’s” second season premieres tonight at 10 p.m. on FX. “The first season was notorious for its dark humor, so you can definitely expect to see more of that,” Sunjata assures viewers. “I can’t divulge too much, but I will say that in terms of Franco’s storyline, audiences will get to see him battle with his addictive side. Besides Franco’s storyline though, every single character is featured in a dramatically compelling or funny way.”

When he’s not in front of the camera, Sunjata spends time with real firefighters to add authenticity to his portrayal of Franco. “I talk a lot with firefighters,” he explains. “I watch the way they interact with each other when they’re on our set. We have a couple members of the cast who were actual firefighters, and I listen to the lingo they throw around and try to incorporate that in my ad-libs to come off sounding more authentic. I try to contact the essence of my character in a general sense and the details follow.”

In addition to his acting talent, Sunjata’s eye-catching good looks and sophisticated style have also garnered attention. In 2003, People Magazine highlighted him in its Fifty Most Beautiful People issue. Sunjata, however, keeps the honor in perspective. “It wasn’t hard to keep a level head,” he tells me. “I have plenty of friends and family to remind me where I come from on a daily basis. Obviously, I would be lying to say its not flattering to be called attractive and be recognized as such. But, at the same time, there’s an obvious superficiality about that type of thing and that whole world. I didn’t have any t-shirts printed up with that picture on it [laughs].”

While he may be humble, with his undeniable acting ability and effortless charisma, Daniel Sunjata is certain to set the entertainment world on fire with his compelling performances for years to come.
