"As a scientist -- as a man -- how far can you go if you're afraid of being wrong?" -- Sister Josepha Montafiore
Revelations owes to theology what Star Trek owes to science: a base upon which to build, if not necessarily adhere to. A religiously themed adventure along the lines of Indiana Jones, Seltzer's six-part teleseries presents a world near its end (also known as "today") into which the Antichrist is being born. But the Antichrist isn't the only child coming to the Earth. In Revelations, the second coming of Christ is also portrayed as another virgin birth. No "coming in the clouds in glory" for this world. Seeking this Christ child is Sister Josepha Montafiore, a maverick nun who requires the help of astronomer Richard Massey. Massey has just recently had experiences with the Isaiah Haden, leader of a Satanic cult which kidnapped and murdered his daughter Lucy. Massey helped capture Haden and imprison him, which is where we start our tale.
Thus is the confluence of events set into motion, as scientist and nun participate in animated debates over the beginnings of the universe, and its possible ends. But when Haden, working from within his cell, arranges for the kidnapping of Massey's ex-wife's stepson, Hawk, Massey finds himself forced not only to work with Josepha in the hopes of recover Hawk, but also to accept that some things simply cannot be explained by science.
A theological thriller despite its flaws, Revelations takes the viewer on a globe-hopping tour from Italy to Prague to Jerusalem. This boxed set of Revelations consists of 2 single-sided discs, each in a snap-tite case, both of which fit snugly in a cardboard designer sleeve.
Special features are tucked away on the second disc, and include a handful of deleted scenes, each with a textual introduction about which episode the scene comes from. There is also a three-minute featurette in which Bill Pullman, Natascha McElhone, Michael Massee and David Seltzer discuss the themes of Revelations.
The viewer can elect to start all the episodes in sequence through the "Play All" option, or use the "Episode Select" option to access a specific chapter of the story. This latter option preludes each episode with a summary paragraph of what occurs, while the menu allows you to skip to any scene in the chapter.
Previews on this DVD set include the upcomingCleopatra 2025: The Complete Series, Sliders: Complete Third Season, and Earth 2: The Entire Series, as well as current releases of Quantum Leap Season 3 and White Noise.
