What do you when a space alien that looks like a walking anteater crashes into your garage? Why, you adopt him as one of the family! ALF, the cat-eating and humor-cracking alien from Melmac, was one of the funniest and most unique series of its time.
With the Season Two release, one would hope that Lions Gate would improve on the horrendous set-up from Season One where they released the edited syndicated versions of the furry creature from Melman but alas no seems to be listening at headquarters because once again we are treated to chopped versions of the original episodes. Don’t get me wrong, I love this series and I’ll take it to get my fix of ALF but come on, give us the real deal. Stop short-changing the fans!
The collection is a pretty good one despite the edited episodes. During its second season, ALF took off and began hitting its stride with some of the better writing of its day. This season included the vaunted Gilligan’s Island episode along with the David Letterman episode. In addition, we see ALF do everything from rigging the TV ratings to save his favorite show to getting Willie into a fight when Brian is beaten up at school to ALF joining a monastery and becoming a monk. It is a hilarious season!
The best part of this collection is the inclusion of ALF’s Christmas Special. This ranks as one of the all-time must-see Christmas specials in my book. I’ll admit that I was not a big Christmas fan before seeing this but by the end of the show, I was in tears. The emotional pull at your heart realizing a child won’t see another Christmas and the way they incorporate the “Yes Virginia, There Is A Santa Claus” newspaper editorial into the story hits you right where it counts. Combine that with a serious ALF and the realization of the real meaning of Christmas and you have a special that deserves to be aired every year.
The collection itself is on four single-sided discs that are easy to remove in a colorful package. There is a guide list included in the set with brief descriptions of episodes as well as a choice for ALF himself to give a brief explanation about the episode on the menu screen. It’s very easy to navigate to the episode of your choosing.
Even though we are getting another butchered version of ALF, the volume is still worthy of being in your collection. If for no other reason than to watch the furry alien from Melmac crack you up all over again.
