"Someone's at the door..."
Repeat that line to any fan of great horror, and the light of recognition comes instantly to their eyes (followed by a quick check over their shoulder.) American Gothic was one of those great series that got cancelled well before its time, evolving into a cult classic too late for network executives to renew and bring the series to a more satisfactory conclusion.
Trinity, South Carolina (zip code 29916) provides the idyllic setting for the tale. If Charlie Daniel's song, "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" is correct, Trinity would be the place he stopped after the song. Although series creator Shaun Cassidy (Invasion) and David Eick (Battlestar Galactica) continually insist that lead character Sheriff Lucas Buck (played by Gary Cole) is not the devil, it's hard to convince thousands of fans who've seen the dark acts the character commited with his own eyes. At the core of everything is a young boy, Caleb Temple (Lucas Black, "Friday Night Lights"), who has a power within him that threatens to corrupt his soul. Lucas wants him as his protege, but Caleb is watched over and protected by the spirit of his sister, Merlyn (Sarah Paulson, "Serenity"), and his long-lost cousin, Gail Emory (Paige Turco). Rounding out our not-so-merry troupe are Lucas Buck's deputy, Ben Healy (Nick Searcy), schoolmarm and vamp Selena Coombs (Brenda Bakke) and Dr. Matt Crower (Jake Weber) our flawed recovering alcoholic hero of sorts.
At turns suspenseful, terrifying, and downright creepy, American Gothic came to television at a time when, perhaps, audiences had already been over-creeped, having already been exposed to The X Files and Twin Peaks. Regardless, it remains one of the better remembered dramas for science fiction and horror fans, showcasing the versatility of Gary Cole and the serious dramatic skills of a young Lucas Black.
This set of three double-sided discs gets even better, featuring deleted and extended scenes, commentary from Cassidy and Eick on the pilot episode, and four final episodes never broadcast on network television.
Sheriff Buck says that, "Conscience is just the fear of getting caught ... All guilt is relative. Loyalty counts. And never let your conscience be your guide." Be loyal to your urge to pick up this disc set today, and squelch that scared little squeaky voice in the back of your mind that tells you to proceed with caution. And maybe, just maybe, the powers that be may even come back and create a theatrical movie to finally tie this plot up once and for all. (Hey, it's been known to happen!)
Previews on this set inlcude seasons and series sets for Kolchak, the Night Stalker, American Gothic, The Munsters, Battlestar Galactica, Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and "Land of the Dead".
