Lost and Delirious: Survivor: Guatemala - The Maya Empire - Episode 7: Pain and Fellowship
by Scott Wyatt Published: October 30, 2005
Hello good people and welcome back to Lost and Delirious. After last week’s mental meltdown from Judd, let’s hope we get back to a more normal week of bug bites, strategy and self-loathing. Hmm, sound like Steph already. Let’s hope the psycho meltdown is over until its time for the reunion show. In the meantime, let’s see what happened this week.
We rejoin the chucklenuts on night 15 as Nakum is returning from Tribal Council. Judd immediately gives the rest of the tribe a big thank you for not paying any attention to his blowout and voting Margaret. To the camera, he goes on and on about how she was pushing his buttons so he had to put her in her place. Yeah, right. Did someone from the crew slip Judd some Valium on the way back because he is awfully tame all of a sudden? While the rest of the tribe is working on the fire, Humpty Dumpty continues to stomp on Margaret’s grave and contends that he’s really a big teddy bear at camp. And the Cubs just won the World Series too. Lydia sums it up by saying she’s glad it’s all over. We agree Lydia. Judd then gives us his chauvinist speech that he’ll laughing all the way to the bank while Margaret is at home making chicken wings or something. To all the women out there, this joke of a man does not speak for all of us. You should bring us a beer too. Just kidding but seriously, someone needs to stomp all over this oaf. It’s at this point that something just short of a miracle takes place. Jaime tells us that Judd has a big mouth duh and he’s a big guy and that scares some folks like Rafe but not him. If anything, it makes him want to keep Judd closer because he’s the kind of person you want in the Final 2 since he will have probably pissed everyone off by that time. Did I just hear a remark that makes sense from Jaime? Although it’s a bit early to be thinking about the Final 2, I have to give props for his thinking because I really didn’t think he possessed that ability. Who woulda thunk it?
It’s very early on Day 16 and Yaxha is already up and semi-moving. Bobby Jon is nursing a severe laceration on his shoulder. A battle scar from the boulder challenge that has ripped the top layers of skin from his shoulder and now sticks to his shirt as it tries to heal. Ick! BJ holds his breath and then rips it away quick. That hurt. He begins to narrate how he hurt it but says it’s part of the game and everyone in the tribe has these marks all over their bodies. Cue the shots of these lesions all over BJ, Brandon and Amy. Nasty! Is this Survivor or a documentary on a leper colony? It’s a rough sight. The aforementioned three stand around and inspect their wounds as Brandon lets Amy know she’s glad she doesn’t have a mirror in camp. He tries to make her feel better by telling her that it makes her look tough and he likes that in a woman. All together now…Awww! To us, Brandon says the sores hurt but when it comes to the challenges he won’t even feel it. Cut! Move to challenge. Sorry, I was trying to be an editor.
REWARD CHALLENGE
Hey, what do you know? I could be an editor. It was choppy but they pulled it off. It’s time for Jeff to get some face time. He brings the two tribes and they see that Margaret and Brian have been given the boot and we get right to the challenge. It’s going to require teamwork and a lot of dexterity. Four tribe members are going to wrap 30 feet of material around their bodies and then unspool as they make their way down the field to the finish. The first person will wind the fabric around their body and then unclip and head to the second station. They will then hook onto the next person and do it all over again. They will do this to all four stations. Once all four have been wrapped up, they will proceed to unwrap themselves. Once each person is unwrapped, unhook and run to the finish line. The fifth person of the tribe will help the others spool as best they can. Once the fourth person is wrapped into the group, they can head to the finish line. The first tribe to get everyone to the finish line wins reward. The reward is a cool zip line ride through the jungle canopy. At the end of the ride, a chocolate orgy will be waiting on them. Apparently, the Maya are also known for discovering chocolate. Where is Jerri from the Outback for this reward? Let’s play!
The helpers will be Jaime and Amy. First up is Steph for Nakum and Brandon for Yaxha. We’re off and Steph grabs a quick lead. At the next station is Lydia and they go face-to-face to begin the second wrap. Yaxha quickly makes it to their second station where Gary awaits. They both face the same way. Steph and Lydia are having problems as Jeff chastises them for not working together. Jaime just looks lost. Yaxha grabs the lead and keeps it until the last station. They get all wrapped up first and Jaime heads for the finish line. Now, they have to unwrap but because Steph had Lydia face the wrong way, they fall to the ground and can’t get up for a long time. This gives Yaxha time to catch up, pass and stroll to victory. Yaxha wins reward! Jeff congratulates Yaxha and says they are heading for their reward right now. To Nakum, he says they panicked, fell down and couldn’t get back up. He’s got nothing for them. The only notable thing is when the tribes leave, Steph is off pouting on her own in front, Judd is way behind with the flag and the rest of Nakum is together. Can we call it (or Steph) for what it is? For her, it’s hooray, I won! When they lose, it’s their fault. I wish both she and Judd would be more team players in both the positive and the negative.
The reward portion is not too much to describe other than Amy is afraid of heights. Eventually, she makes it down the zip line first followed by the rest of the tribe. Brandon and BJ are speechless at the sights. At the other end of the ride is the chocolate fantasy. And it’s in almost every form. Yaxha pigs out and carries everything they can back to camp and try to keep the chocolate and milk down.
Immediately, we move to the morning of Day 17 at Nakum. Everything seems quiet. Rafe, Steph and Jaime are playing cards that were fashioned from leaves and body paint. Meanwhile, Yaxha is paddling towards the Nakum camp. This is something new. They are reminding each other not to make any negative comments today. It looks like they are headed to Nakum. Sure enough, they are. It is Danni’s birthday and they thought a pool party was in order. Who gets to give Danni her birthday spanking? I volunteer. Gary warns that he doesn’t want to jump in between BJ and Jaime but BJ says he is more mature than that. Ha Ha Ha
The card game is in full swing when all of a sudden the name Nakum is heard being shouted from the dock. Suffice to say that no one expected a visit. Jaime is especially irritated even though Steph and the rest seem interested. As Nakum nears the dock, Danni says it’s her birthday and they thought a pool party was in order. Gary tells them no game talk, no buffs but just plain have fun day. Cindy and Jaime are skeptical but they all get in their boat and paddle over to Yaxha. On the whole ride over, Jaime is whining like a kid that doesn’t want to go to the doctor. Cindy is really pissed about trip but reluctantly goes over because the tribe wanted to go. All these are missing is to cross their arms and pout out their lip.
Yaxha breaks out the left over chocolate from the day before and the “Oh My Gods” fly all over the place. BJ tells us the day was about fellowship. He even gives us our weekly school lesson by telling us that the ancient Maya tribal chiefs would share a smoke before going to war with each other. Not much else happens during this part. Jaime sits off by himself and takes mental notes. This guy looks like someone forced to sit at the little kids table when he feels he should be at the adult table. He tells us that this game is a business and he cannot take it for anything less. Sounds an awful lot like Brian Heidek has returned. Finally, Jaime has had enough and turns into the psycho parent from hell and says they have to go. We then get a completely unnecessary shot of Judd in his wet white underwear getting out of the pool. Maybe they wanted us to see Judd’s best side. Back at the boat, Jaime tells the tribe that he’ll like them after the game. On the ride back, when someone makes a remark about the game plan, Jaime says if they don’t want to stick to it then they can vote his ass out of the game. Don’t you wish you were on this tribe? Steph tells us that she doesn’t care for Jaime’s attitude and she isn’t going to back down from it so there could be a clash between the two of them. We can only hope.
Back at Yaxha, Day 18 has arrived and Bobby Jon is nursing his shoulder laceration in the pool and it is attracting minnows to feed on BJ. At the same time, BJ is trying to eat the fish. I’m not even going to go into this one. Cut to Amy and Gary who are discussing strategy and how the challenge is vitally important to them. Amy says if they lose the next immunity then she isn’t going to lie but she’s not going down quietly. She says Gary can lie. And if she finds out that Gary has been lying to her then she is going to use her police stuff to find him and then beat him down. Gary continues to play ignorance and tells us that he is trying to keep a straight face but she can hunt for Gary Hawkins all she wants because there isn’t one in Grand Haven, Michigan.
Suddenly, Amy and Brandon are bringing back tree mail announcing the Immunity Challenge. Amy continues to extol the numbers game because if they merge after this challenge then its 5-on-5. BJ is pacing in nervous anticipation. In a confessional, BJ says if they lose this challenge and then merge they are in a mess. They would be down 2 people and could easily be picked off so this challenge is the most important one to date.
IMMUNITY CHALLENGE
Jeff’s back! Remarkably, there is no chitchat before the challenge. I would have thought Jeff would have brought up the pool party from the day before but alas no such luck. The challenge is an archaeological dig. Three members will take turns in running out and unearthing giant pieces of a puzzle to bring back to the platform. Each person has to attempt to retrieve at least one piece. After that, you can go in any order. Once all 12 pieces have been retrieved, the last two members of the tribe will assemble the pieces of the puzzle. Nakum decides to sit Lydia big surprise here. It’s time to play.
Nothing really exciting happens during the challenge. Nakum gets a lead and loses it. Then Yaxha then back to Nakum and so on and so on. The only real excitement is when Jaime drops a piece of the puzzle on Steph’s shin. No matter though as Nakum wins another immunity challenge. That’s right folks. Steph has won two in a row. Make sure to buy your lottery tickets and prepare for the Rapture. Jeff congratulates Nakum for working well together and lets Yaxha know that he will be waiting for them at Tribal Council. As the tribes leave, Cindy is cradling the immunity idol like one of her tiger cubs back at the zoo.
As Yaxha returns from the challenge, the mood is grim at best. Amy knows she has an uphill battle to stay in the game. She takes her shot with Danni by admitting that the best she can do is to try and outwit people to stay in the game. Danni looks like she is starting to waver. First, she says she would hate to vote out BJ because he didn’t make the merge last time he played but then again he has had his shot and the rest of the folks deserve a chance. Amy jumps at this and asks if that is an option. Danni isn’t sure but she did think it was unfair for BJ and Steph to come back because of their advantage from playing the game before. Finally, someone is using their brains but let’s send Steph home first. Amy spirits are lifted at the possibility of turning this around. She runs to Gary and lays out the deal. Gary tells her if she gets Danni then she’s got him but otherwise he has to preserve himself. Great answer. Now he’s safe no matter how it plays out.
In another part of the tribe, BJ and Brandon are discussing the upcoming vote. BJ seems to know he might be a target. BJ goes to work on Brandon’s conscience. He lets him know that they are close and if he doesn’t at lest make the jury then he’s gonna be real bad off. He says it would be a lifelong dream to make the jury. Huh? Lifelong? The show’s been on the air for 5 ½ years. And what about the million? I thought that was the dream for every player.
Later in the afternoon, Danni goes to talk to Brandon at the pool in the pouring rain. Danni knows this is a big vote and she isn’t sure about what to do. For his part, Brandon is in the same boat. They discuss the situation and both agree that Amy probably deserves to be here more than BJ because of the previous experience. It seems that neither Danni or Brandon know what they are going to do at the vote.
TRIBAL COUNCIL
Jeff brings them in and we get to the pain. He tries to paint a rosy picture by saying its Day 18 and with 7 people already gone but you’re still here. How does that feel Danni? She doesn’t bite though. Instead, she says nothing feels good because they have all bonded really well and now they have to vote out someone else. Jeff asks Gary what’s different about this trip to Tribal Council than it was before. Gary answers that the energy and just getting close to one another through the competition makes it a strong tribe. Jeff moves to Amy and asks about her characterization of the game so far. She replies that this has been the bomb. She’s been through things that she will never get to experience again. Jeff moves to Brandon and asks how difficult it is for him to send someone home than he anticipated. Brandon says it’s a lot more difficult because you try to justify to yourself why they should go home. He continues that the conflict of alliance vs. deserving comes into play. BJ’s head jerks like a tight bungee cord at this remark. Jeff goes back to Danni and works on the deserving vs. playing angle. Meanwhile, BJ looks as if he is about to cry. She answers that it’s tough and she knew it would be but giving your word and keeping it is tough in this game. Finally, Jeff gets to BJ and asks what he does when he comes to Tribal Council and doesn’t want to vote anyone out. BJ says his only answer is to ask yourself what kind of deal did you make with someone on Day 2 or Day 3. Interesting answer. Well, it’s time to find out.
Bobby Jon votes for Amy and gives her props for being the most real person he has ever met. We see Amy write down Bobby Jon’s name but no remarks. Jeff brings in the urn and in a 4-1 vote, Amy is voted out of the tribe. They all share a round of hugs before Jeff snuffs the torch and departs. She leaves with her arm held high. Jeff says he is convinces that this tribe has become a close group and hopefully that will help you because it’s time for a new challenge.
The four of them are not returning to their camp. They will head directly for Nakum’s camp because they are no longer two separate tribes. Interesting way to do this. I love it! It’s merge time. All of their personal belongings and rewards will be sent over to the new camp. Jeff holds up the new buffs and says it is their responsibility to take them to the new tribe and tosses them to Danni. He ends it saying it is up to the ten of them to decide on a new tribe name. Grab your torches and head on over. Good night.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
When Amy is talking to us in one of her confessionals about Gary and his occupation, she fired off this gem. If I find out Gary is lying, I am gonna kick his ass!
This is starting to get better. I love how they are doing the merge this season. Have the new folks show up in the middle of the night with the surprise. This is really going to be good because of the pool party they had the day before and we know how Jaime and Cindy feel about them. Now, the game goes from a team one to an individual one. Now, we get to see how the big gun of Judd is going to hold up against Jaime, BJ, Brandon, Steph, Gary and the rest. I’ll bet the fireworks begin early. It will also be interesting to see if Cindy tries to jump back with Danni, BJ and Brandon to see if they can throw a big wrench into the game. Next week is a critical immunity. The person voted out will be the last non-jury member so this a very important time in the game.
Be sure to check back next week for another edition of Lost and Delirious. Until next week, take care and God Bless.
