DVD Review: Frasier - The Complete Seventh Season
by Chad Maddux
Published: November 11, 2005
For twenty years, the character of Dr. Frasier Crane has been a television fixture. Kelsey Grammer first played the role in 1984 on Cheers. When Cheers ended in 1993, Grammer continued the role on Frasier which premiered the same year. Only three seasons remain unreleased now that the seventh season is out on DVD. (Season eleven, the final season, was released on DVD in 2004.)

Kelsey Grammer has been nominated for an Emmy award eleven times for his role as Dr. Crane. He is also the only actor to receive multiple nominations for the same role on three different series: two from Cheers, eight from Frasier, and one for a guest appearance on Wings, still playing Dr. Frasier Crane. He's won three times, all three for his role on Frasier.

Dr. Frasier Crane is a psychiatrist who hosts a radio advice program in Seattle. His abrasive, retired cop father, Martin (John Mahoney) lives with him interrupting what could be a peaceful existence. When Martin moved in, he brought Eddie, a Jack Russell terrier. Martin has also has a live-in physical therapist named Daphne (Jane Leeves). Frasier's brother, Niles (David Hyde Pierce), is also a psychiatrist an is highly competitive.

The seventh season featured 23 episodes which aired from September 23, 1999 through May 18, 2000. This season was especially memorable because it was the season that Daphne finally learned about Niles' feelings towards her. Also in this season, Frasier falls for a woman who looks exactly like his dead mother. Niles is oblivious to the fact that he is dating a prostitute. A shock-jock goes after Frasier. Niles becomes an art critic. Frasier and Niles become paranoid. Frasier and Niles may be Russian royalty. Frasier dies...according to news reports.

Frasier injures his back and some pills give him "loose lips." Frasier, Niles, and Martin go to Idaho. Frasier writes a theme song. Frasier dates an old high school classmate. Martin pretends to be gay. Roz takes a vacation leaving Frasier in need of a temporary producer. Frasier and Niles compete to be cork master. Frasier and Roz become roomies. Frasier thinks television may be his new calling. Frasier tries to throw a bachelor party. Frasier is honored with a caricature that he considers to be less than flattering. Daphne's brother pays a visit. One couple will elope.

Unfortunately, there are no bonus features included with this set. However, this season still features nearly nine hours worth of entertainment. The seventh season received nine Emmy nominations. This season comes in a fold-out box which holds the four-disc set. It includes no booklet and also does not include brief synopses of the episodes, a feature I like very much. Other TV box sets, such as 3rd Rock From the Sun, Alias and The Brady Bunch, have this feature as part of the DVD content, in the booklet, or printed right on the box.
