CSI: Miami, the spin-off of the top-rated series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, is being released on DVD. The newest release is season three and, with an explosive first episode, it promises to deliver plenty of entertainment.

Lieutenant Horatio Caine (David Caruso) leads his investigators into crime scenes to figure out what happened using the tools of forensic science. Most of the regulars from the previous season have returned for this season. Episodes for season three originally aired on CBS from September 20, 2004 through May 23, 2005.

During this season's 24 episodes, the CSIs will investigate a variety of cases. During their first case, one CSI will die. A man opens fire at a party. A woman is pushed in front of a moving bus. A "mass-email" leads to a "mass-gathering." An alcohol investigator is killed in a nightclub. A baseball player's wife is brutally murdered. A tsunami hits Miami. An evening of "speed-dating" leads to murder. Modern-day pirates attack. A man falls from a building and kills a pedestrian. Someone is accused of stealing from the dead. A gang showdown takes place in an emergency room.

A police officer is murdered during a routine traffic stop. A woman is swallowed whole by a snake. The Everglades catch fire. A plane carrying over $1 billion in checks crashes. A skateboarding video game stage becomes a crime scene. An IRS agent is killed during an attempted repossession. Horatio is given some life-altering information. A custody battle leads to murder. A former football star is killed at his high school reunion. A death row inmate's case is investigated again. Horatio will get a "dead" surprise.

BONUS FEATURES

Copyright © CBS. All rights reserved. The third season comes with an entire disc dedicated to the bonus features. "Delivering the Goods" is a 13-minute featurette that examines the creative elements of the season. The writers discuss how the get their inspiration and comment on some of the episodes from this season. Also, the actors provide some commentary on various elements with a special concentration on the emotional first episode, "Lost Son." The impressive stunt elements in this season are the focus of "Visualizing Season 3." Viewers get a behind-the-scenes look at how these elements are developed and created.

"Locations: Coast to Coast" could be an extension of the previous "Visualizing" featurette. "Locations" addresses the problems of filming a Miami-based show in the middle of Los Angeles. It shows the editing and filming techniques used to replace elements of Southern California with elements of Miami. "Deep Blue Sea" focuses on the in-water elements of the show and reveals some of the filming techniques required to realistically produce those elements.

Copyright © CBS. All rights reserved. The final featurette is broken down into eight parts and provides some brief "lessons" on how to be a medical examiner. It's hosted by John Haynes, the technical advisor for the show. At just over thirteen minutes in total, various death scenarios are presented and evidence recovery methods relating to those scenarios are the "lessons." This featurette was very clever and a great addition to the set.

In addition to those features, there are six audio commentary tracks that accompany six different episodes (see the disc guide below for the specifics). Those tracks can be found on the same discs as their respective episodes. The bonus features are terrific for season three. Some TV box sets don't include any bonus features at all so to see such a comprehensive set of features is impressive. They definitely complement a great season.
