DVD Review: The Brady Bunch - The Complete Fourth Season
by Chad Maddux
Published: November 8, 2005
The most insanely functional TV family that has ever existed is now out on DVD. The fourth season of The Brady Bunch features 23 episodes that aired from September 22, 1972 through March 23, 1973.
This season features a few of the more popular and well-known episodes of the series: the Hawaii episodes and the infamous football-in-the-nose episode. The season begins in Hawaii and spans the first three episodes. In addition, Marcia is now a freshman in high school. Peter's love interest falls for Greg. A ghost haunts the girls. A father-son duet and mother-daughter duet will be performed. Jan becomes an only child. Greg decides to be an architect...but only for an essay. The kids decide it's time for Alice to hit the road. Greg becomes a judge...with a bias. Benedict Arnold becomes a Brady.
Marcia wants to be Mrs. Dentist. Bobby becomes a safety monitor. Greg is grounded but has a hot date. The kids compete in a talent contest (might they sing?). Jesse James is Bobby's troubling obsession. Marcia has three dates: one with Charley, one with Doug, and one with fate (and a football). Peter is hired and fired. A pair of earrings goes missing. The kids try to get their lonely grandparents together. Cindy is smarter than Bobby and won't stop reminding everyone. Marcia and Greg fight over the attic.
This set features nearly 10 hours worth of entertainment. Watching the episodes reminds me of my younger days, watching episodes early in the morning over breakfast before school. (Original airdates were quite a bit before my time.) Although the problems encountered by the Bradys can, at times, seem a bit goofy and their obsession with singing can certainly be annoying, the series remains one of the best-loved and most well-known TV series ever created.
The four-disc set comes in two slim clear cases that slip into the holding box. One unique element is the cover of the box which features a hologram. As you move the box, the Brady faces look in different directions, mirroring the familiar opening title sequence.
Unfortunately, there are no bonus features included with this set. This seems to be a trend with older TV series. Many items which could have been included as bonus features may have been destroyed years ago. Of course, the entire cast, except for Robert Reed, is still alive and I'm sure they'd all be willing to sit down for an interview.
