DVD Review: That '70s Show - Season Three
by Chad Maddux
Published: December 10, 2005
That '70s Show is a series set, obviously, in the 1970s with all of the glory that is the '70s. When I first heard about the show in 1998, I thought it sounded incredibly stupid. Having entered the world in the 1980s, I didn't think a show about the preceding decade could ever be entertaining.

I was wrong.

Ever since I first watched an episode during the second season, I've loved the series. (My DISH Network DVR is set to record every episode so I don't miss any of the few remaining new episodes.) Although the series is set in the '70s and there are plenty of aspects of the show that wouldn't translate to other decades, the show as a whole could span any decade. The third season features 25 episodes that originally aired from October 3, 2000 through May 22, 2001.

This season features two of my favorite episodes: "Eric's Panties" and "Dine & Dash." The reaction of Kelso and Fez during "Eric's Panties" is hilarious and the payback in "Dine & Dash" is something I'd probably do. Also during this season, Hyde gets caught with marijuana. Red's new rules aren't being followed. Donna finds some "special" magazines under Eric's bed. A special Halloween episode plays out in the style of Hitchcock. Fez and Jackie do the disco! Kitty wants to have another baby. Red and Bob throw competing barbeques. Jackie and Donna have a girl's night out. Kelso tries to win Jackie back. Kelso photographs a UFO. Donna sets up Fez on a date.

Donna becomes "Hot Donna." Laurie is cheating on Kelso (what a shocker). Eric and Donna's romantic weekend holds two unpleasant surprises. Eric and Red forget Kitty's birthday. Jackie tests Kelso's willpower. Eric has a sexy new move for Donna. Fez's new girlfriend is a psycho. Red and Bob have a dispute over where their property lines are really located. Eric reads Donna's journal. The guys are detained in Canada. Donna ditches Eric for Ted Nugent. Eric gives Donna a promise ring.

"A Look Back at Season Three" is a over 23 minutes long and features the majority of the cast as well as director David Trainer commenting on this season. They all appear to agree that this was the best season of the show. The characters and several episodes are highlighted along with commentary on the growth and development since the first two seasons.

One complaint that I have about this set surrounds the design and operation of the menus. Most of the episodes feature two options. In addition to the actual episode, every episode features an optional promotional spot and most episodes feature optional introductions by various cast members. (These options are separate from the optional audio commentary tracks.) You cannot simply scroll through the episodes in the menu. Instead, when you highlight an episode, the accompanying options automatically pop on the screen. To scroll to the next episode, you must scroll through both options first. Then, to watch an episode, you must select either "On" or "Off" for each option. For instance, if you wish to watch the last of seven episodes on the disc, you would have to press two different buttons a combined 15 times before you could actually start watching the episode (once to reach the episode list, 12 times to actually reach the last episode, and another two times to select "Off" for each option). Also, scrolling is very slow because the two options take a moment to load each time you scroll to a different episode. The menu definitely needs an overhaul before the fourth season comes out early next year. Otherwise, this set would make a great Christmas gift for a fan of the show.

Also available for purchase: Season 1 | Season 2
