Christopher Gorham’s presence on Out of Practice is one of the main reasons why the CBS sitcom has become the hottest new comedy of the season. Portraying a central role on this show about a family of single doctors marks the first time Gorham has acted in a sitcom, and it also gives him the opportunity to work alongside a cast he loves. “I hate saying it because it sounds like such a cliché, but [the cast] really does get along well,” Gorham says. “We just have so much fun working together, and it just keeps getting better. I think it translates into the episodes. I think you can see us growing into these parts as the season progresses.”

Prior to Out of Practice, Gorham had dramatic roles in the critically acclaimed shows Jake 2.0 and Medical Investigation, but Gorham says he prefers working on a sitcom. “It’s so much better. The schedule is amazing, and you get to laugh all day at work. I don’t know how you beat that. I imagine if I were on a bad sitcom it might be a different story, but luckily I’m on a really great sitcom. It’s been the best job I’ve had.”

Gorham credits Kelsey Grammer (who directed the show’s Pilot episode) with helping him make a smooth transition from dramatic acting to sitcom acting. “In just the short time of working with him on the pilot, Kelsey Grammer actually conformed to the role [of acting mentor] more than anyone,” Gorham remarks. “I don’t even know if he’s aware of it…Also, his role in Frasier is similar to my role in Out of Practice as being kind of the central character who things revolve around. He was really helpful in allowing me to find my comfort zone and teaching me the ropes of working on a half-hour show.”

When he’s not acting on the show, Gorham enjoys playing sports and often goes head to head with Out of Practice co-star Ty Burrell. “Ty Burrell and I love to toss the football around, and we play tennis,” he says. “We get together every Friday morning and play tennis before work. Those are our two sports. I love playing basketball, but Ty doesn’t like to play basketball with me because he claims he’s too old and he’s going to hurt his knees. [Laughs].”

With the holidays fast approaching, Gorham plans to take his wife and young children to New York to enjoy the holiday season. “We’ve always wanted to spend the holidays in New York and visit Rockefeller Center, see the Rockettes, go ice skating in Central Park and do that whole thing,” he says. “We decided we’ll just take the kids and go have Christmas in New York this year.”

Although Gorham and his family may enjoy the holiday festiveness of New York, with the growing popularity of Out of Practice, Gorham will likely call LA home for many years to come.
