Law & Order has been honored with over 50 Emmy nominations since it premiered in 1990. The show covers a case in its entirety, from the investigations to the prosecutions. The show begins with the police investigation. At the mid-point of the hour-long drama, the prosecutors take over. They use the evidence gathered during the investigation to prosecute the suspect.
The perennial show is currently in its 16th season, having aired over 350 episodes. The show has inspired three spinoffs: Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Law & Order: Trial by Jury. The first two spinoffs continue to air. Trial by Jury was cancelled in May 2005 after just twelve episodes. The show has also inspired a series of video games that give players the opportunity to investigate and prosecute a case from beginning to end. I reviewed the most recent installment, "Law & Order: Justice is Served," and found that the game does not live up to the show. The fourth season features 22 episodes that originally aired on NBC from September 15, 1993 through May 25, 1994.
The show's stars have become quite familiar to television audiences over the past 15 years. Jerry Orbach stars as Detective Lennie Briscoe. Chris Noth, part of the original cast, stars as Detective Mike Logan. S. Epatha Merkerson
stars as Lt. Anita Van Buren. Michael Moriarty is another original cast member who stars as Executive A.D.A. Benjamin "Ben" Stone. Jill Hennessy is Assistant District Attorney Claire Kincaid. There are a variety of other regular cast members as well.
During this season, a talk show host schedules a murder to air on the show. A homeless man is found severely beaten. A rock star is charged with rape that he says was consensual. A racist man is charged with several murders. Money can buy innocence when a wealthy woman murders her husband. A teenager is suspected of murdering his father. A bombing suspect may have been brainwashed. A skeleton revives one of Stone's old cases. A teenager's defense surrounds an extra Y chromosome. A mail-order bride is charged with murdering her husband.
An 82-year-old woman is found dead in her apartment. A millionaire's son is kidnapped, and the father refuses to cooperate. An adoption scam is uncovered after a woman's child is reportedly kidnapped. A past affair leads to a resignation. A teenager is shot and a former police detective's son may be involved. A letter bomb kills a woman involved in a nasty divorce. Briscoe and Logan have a heavy caseload with five unrelated murders in just one day. An athlete's father may have been killed due to gambling debts. Claims of racism are fueled by a black minister. A foster child disappears from an abusive home. A tennis player is attacked before a big match. A pedestrian is killed and the investigation leads to the Russian mafia.
This season features a variety of guest stars. Some of the notable guests are James Earl Jones, Jane Kaczmarek, Christine Baranski, and Alisson Janney. The set comes with three double-sided discs contained in individual slim clear cases that slide into the exterior box. (I am not a fan of the awkward double-sided design). The only bonus features in this set are some deleted scenes that accompany ten episodes. In total, there are 43 deleted or extended scenes. No other bonus features are present.
