Miami Vice was the 1980s cop drama that followed two vice cops from the city of Miami. Don Johnson stars as Sonny Crocket and is joined by Philip Michael Thomas as Rico Tubbs. Prior to Miami Vice, Don Johnson had starred in four failed pilots. As a result, NBC executives did not want to cast Johnson for fear that their new pilot might be his fifth failure. Lucky for them, they made the right choice. To prepare for the roles, Johnson and Thomas accompanied real Miami Vice squads on stakeouts. In fact, Johnson came to his audition the morning following an all-night stakeout. He did not bother to clean-up prior to the audition and arrived unshaven with his hair a mess. He was immediately hired. In addition to Johnson and Thomas, Edward James Olmos stars as Lieutenant Martin Castillo.
The second season features 23 episodes (a two-part episode has been combined to make the official count 22) that originally aired from September 27, 1985 through May 9, 1986. Sonny and Rico cover the Miami area in their Ferrari as they track down criminals across the city. One of the most celebrated aspects of the show was the incredible soundtrack. For this release, the soundtrack has been remastered in 5.1 Surround Sound and features music from Phil Collins, U2, The Who and plenty more. The soundtrack was so popular that it was #1 on the charts for 11 weeks, good enough to make it the most successful TV soundtrack ever.
To ensure the accuracy of the show, producers enlisted technical advisers that all served with the real Miami Vice unit. Cast members, including Johnson and Thomas, were required to pass the Florida Department of Law Enforcement firearms test. All of their work paid off as Miami Vice remains an incredible, action-packed crime drama two decades later.
The set comes in a fold-out case which holds the three double-sided discs. (I am not a fan of the awkward double-sided design.) The fold-out case slides up into the exterior case (as opposed to the usual design in which it slides in the side). There are no bonus features in this set, as is the case with most older TV shows. Despite the lack of bonus features and the awkward disc design, this set would make a great addition to a DVD collection for any fan of the show.
