The second season of Roseanne Barr's insanely successful hit television series is now available on this 4-DVD set, with a smidgen of some interesting extras.
Season one ended with Roseanne convincing her friends to walk out with her from the job at Wellman plastics. It was a gutsy move, and it worked out great for all of her friends. The only one it didn't turn out well for was Rosie herself, who finds herself bouncing from interviews to temp jobs this year. She nearly lands a job as a secretary until at the last minute it's discovered she has no computer skills. A temporary job for Dan's boss brings the neurotic and love-starved Uncle Burt into the picture (who tries to buy the Conner family love by giving them a refrigerator.) She takes a job at a fast-food restaurant, only to be put upon by her tyrannical 17-year-old boss, and finally ends up at a nice friendly hair salon (a situation that could have spun off into its own sitcom rightly enough but never did) until she's hurt in a car accident.
Of course, it's not all about Rosie this season. Becky breaks wind during a school speech, and later breaks into the booze cabinet. Jackie decides to go to the police academy. Darlene's writing talents begin to show this season when she wins a poetry contest, much to her chagrin. And Dan's father (played by Ned Beatty) starts to show an interest in Crystal, whom he later marries. Watch for Stephen Dorff to appear this season as Becky's crush Jimmy Meltrigger in three of the episodes, Stephen Root as a lawyer (sort of), and Jay Sanders (The Day After Tomorrow) as brain-dead biker buddy, Ziggy.
Special features on this set include an interview with John Goodman who looks back on the show and on what kind of character he thought Dan Conner was. Michael Fishman reveals what it was like to be a kid growing up in a television family and what he took from each of them. There's also a short cast reunion segment that brings Goodman and Fishman, as well as Barr, Goranson, Gilbert, and Metcalf, which occurs (properly enough) at a Hollywood bowling alley.
Two of the remaining features are clip shows, which could have easily been left out. It may have been different if they'd have had a bit of narration to them. The final one is actually a preview for another upcoming Roseanne project: Peanut Butter and Jellyfish, a made-for-kids show featuring a singing and dancing Roseanne. (Don't look at me like that! This one's actually okay given the setting -- it's a far cry from the "Star-Spangled Banner" brouhaha.)
Previews on this set include 3rd Rock from the Sun and Grounded for Life.
