By far the funniest film of 2005, “Wedding Crashers” arrives on DVD in an “uncorked” edition that includes over eight minutes of extra footage. Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn star as two carefree guys who crash weddings in the hopes of scoring one-night-stands with beautiful women.
Things change when they crash the wedding of the daughter of the US Secretary of the Treasury. John (Wilson) meets the bride’s sister, Claire (McAdams), and instantly becomes infatuated with her. The bride’s other sister, Gloria (Fisher), latches on to Jeremy and becomes a “stage-five-clinger.” The situation becomes even more complicated when their father, William (Walken), invites John and Jeremy to spend the weekend at their family resort, where John must convince Claire to leave her wealthy fiancée for him.
“Wedding Crashers” is one of the few comedies that can honestly claim to have audiences rolling in the aisles, because screenwriters Steve Faber and Bob Fisher packed the script with one hilarious scenario after another. Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn and Rachel McAdams are so likeable in their roles that it’s impossible not to fall in love with their characters. McAdams was, without a doubt, the breakout star of 2005, and with this movie, Wilson and Vaughn established themselves as the reigning kings of comedy in Hollywood.
The DVD contains both the theatrical and “uncorked” versions of the movie. Adding eight minutes to a comedy that is already two-hours long would spell disaster for most films, but the side-splitting new scenes in the “uncorked” version of “Wedding Crashers” merit the extended running time. A scene at the Cleary wedding in which Jeremy runs into one of his past wedding conquests is one of the most comical moments in the film and should have been included in the theatrical version.
In addition to the extra footage in the “uncorked” version of the film, the disc’s bonus material contains more scenes not shown in theatres. None of these scenes are standouts, but the one in which Wilson and Vaughn perform a goofy duet at a wedding generates a few laughs.
The disc has two featurettes, one that details the production of the film and another in which Wilson and Vaughn joke about the rules of wedding crashing. Both featurettes are nice additions to the DVD.
The production featurette talks to a wide range of people involved in the filmmaking process, featuring everyone from the movie’s major stars to the director to the guy who made the animal balloons for a scene at the Cleary wedding. The featurette also highlights the amount of detail that goes into making a major motion picture. For example, director David Dobkin hired a wedding planner to design and add authenticity to each of the weddings in the film’s opening montage.
The disc’s audio commentary with Wilson and Vaughn does not generate as many laughs as I thought it would, but this disappointment isn’t enough to overshadow the DVD’s other great features. With both versions of the film and a decent amount of quality bonus content, “Wedding Crashers” is a must own DVD.
