The supernatural drama from the WB, Charmed, returns to DVD with the fourth season. The show chronicles the lives of the Charmed Ones, three sisters who must come together to fulfill an ancient witchcraft prophecy.

Shannen Doherty, who played Rue, decided to leave the show after the third season. Therefore, her character was written out of the show and died in the final episode of the third season. She was replaced with Rose McGowan who plays Paige, the half-sister of Phoebe and Piper.

The fourth season of Charmed featured 22 episodes that originally aired on the WB from October 4, 2001 through May 16, 2002. Earlier this year, the WB announced that it is merging with UPN to create a new network called the CW. Several long-running series from both networks will not be around when the new network launches in September 2006. The WB revealed that the current season of Charmed will be its last. The eighth season will concluded with the series finale in May 2006.

As I mentioned above, the fourth season was the debut season for Rose McGowan. I have never liked Shannen Doherty, and her departure from the show was no great loss. However, I dislike Rose McGowan even more. She is not a very good actress and was likely hired only for the eye candy she provides (which, obviously, isn't too bad). The show was already pretty goofy and quite unoriginal. After all, these are witches that use their powers to do good and fight evil. During this season, a demon shrinks Phoebe to a mere five inches tall. In another episode, the sisters battle Warlocks who are enslaving...ah, who cares.

Watching the show and some of the goofy language used (i.e., The Underworld, The Book of Shadows, Warlocks, Whitelighter, etc), it sounds like the type of language that might be found in a Harry Potter book or movie. I've never read a Harry Potter book or seen any of the movies so I won't comment on them (and don't send me Harry Potter hate mail) but the style of language seems very similar. The reason I've avoided Harry Potter is the simple fact that it sounds wholly uninteresting to me. Along that same line, Charmed is rather boring and, at times, laughable.

The main fanbase for the show likely includes an age category that is unemployed and still in middle or high school. If you like the show and fit in that category, ask your parents to buy it for you (or buy it using one of those silly prepaid debit cards so many teenagers seem to have these days). If you are a fan of the show and don't fit in that category, grow up and save your $35 (the average online price). If you aren't a fan of the show, you aren't missing anything.

The audio is presented in Dolby Digital with English and French stereo tracks. The video is presented in Full Screen. This set's total runtime is 15 hours, 58 minutes. The 22 episodes are packaged on six single-sided discs contained in three dual-disc slim clear cases. There are no bonus features.
