The Golden Girls are four women in their "golden" years that have...well, problems. The show features the comedy of Betty White (one of my favorites), the hilarious Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty. This set features the fourth season.

The fourth season featured 26 episodes that originally aired from October 8, 1988 through May 13, 1989. The show lasted seven season on NBC, airing form 1985 through 1992. However, it has been in syndication with re-runs airing for as long as I can remember, almost exclusively on Lifetime.

The show is about all of the crazy things that the four not-dead-yet women manage to get mixed up with. Although the show features white-haired (and dyed-haired) women, it's comedy can certainly appeal to other audiences. I'll admit that I could find other things to do instead of watching an episode of The Golden Girls but, when I do watch, I laugh.

Some of the antics the ladies get involved with this season include a lawsuit from Sophia over baseball-related injuries, a commercial starring Dorothy and Sophia, and a claim that Dorothy was switched at birth. Of course, there are some story lines that some of us just don't need to hear about. In one episode, Rose tries to talk to her date about sex and eventually discovers that he is impotent. Although they may be fictional characters, I don't need anything that might lead to nightmares about my grandparents...if you know what I mean.

There is one bonus feature included with this set although it is not enjoyable. "The Top Ten Guest Stars of Season 4" is appropriately titled and self-explanatory. It is fairly pointless since you would have already seen all of these guest stars (plus the others not included in the bonus feature) when you watched the season.

There is nothing wrong with the audio or video of this set. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital Stereo. The video is presented in the Full Screen format.

This set comes on three single-sided discs. They didn't use the ridiculous double-sided disc format. However, they did use a case design that I hate even more than I hate double-sided discs: disc stacking. Disc stacking is a design of the case that partially stacks one disc on top of another. In this case, disc 1 partially covers disc 2. This requires you to remove disc 1 in order to access and remove disc 2. To replace disc 2, you must repeat the procedure. Why they can't simply have a separate disc holder for all discs like other sets is beyond my comprehension.

This set has an average online price hovering around $30, which is a standard price for such a series. The show is certainly funny; you can't deny that. However, the show airs constantly on Lifetime so you could very easily see episodes without paying for this set. If you like the convenience of no commercials (and haven't yet enter the wonderful world of a Digital Video Recorder), this set would be a good purchase. For casual fans, stick to re-runs on cable.
