A Dose of Reality: The Amazing Race 9 - Episode 05
by Dan Weltin
Published: March 29, 2006
Last week the two-part leg concluded and we said good-bye to Mother/Daughter Wanda and Desiree. Currently we’re in Germany and Lazy Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy are kicking things off with a 2:50 a.m. departure.

Teams must fly to Palermo, Italy on the island of Sicily. Once there they’ll take a taxi to an opera house.

Hippies BJ and Tyler depart second. They get directions and wait around for Southern Parents Lake and Michelle who depart third.

Lazy Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy arrive at the airport first and find the earliest flight, but the ticket counter isn’t open yet. Hippies BJ and Tyler arrive with Southern Parents Lake and Michelle and teams kill time by racing wheelchairs.

Southern Parents Lake and Michelle don’t take part in the wheelchair games, instead opting to search the Internet to book their flight. Michelle has some troubling getting the Web page to translate to English, but Hippies BJ and Tyler figure it out and book the last two tickets on the early flight!

All this takes place before Old Folks Fran and Barry even depart from the Pit Stop. They are followed by Loveable Dorks Lori and Dave who are so in loooove. After them Team Mojo Monica and Joseph depart.

Back at the airport, the ticket counters open, but Lazy Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy can’t get on the flight thanks to Hippies BJ and Tyler. They opt for standby and it works. Southern Parents Lake and Michelle book passage on a later flight that will get them to Sicily at 2:00 p.m. Old Folks Fran and Barry arrive and find an earlier connecting flight that will arrive 30 minutes before Southern Parents Lake and Michelle. Also on that earlier flight are Loveable Dorks Lori and Dave and Team Mojo Monica and Joseph. But Lake and Michelle won’t be alone; Team Chi-town Ray and Yolanda and Pink Hotties Dani and Danielle are also on the late flight.

DETOUR

Hippies BJ and Tyler have an earlier connecting flight than Lazy Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy and therefore get to the cluebox first. Teams now drive to Castellammare de Golfo. The clue there is a Detour.

This week teams either choose Foundry or Laundry. In Foundry, teams go to a metalworks where they pick up a 110-pound bell, drive it on a three-wheel truck and then hand carry it up a flight of stairs. In Laundry, teams must stand on apartment balconies and search 2,400 pieces of clothing hanging on clotheslines to find one of 16 marked clothes.

Hippies BJ and Tyler arrive first and choose Laundry. They find the right piece of clothing rather quickly. Now teams drive to Segesta and find an ancient Greek amphitheater. Caution: Yield ahead.

The other teams are en route to the Detour. Pink Hotties Dani and Danielle have trouble working the stick shift. Lazy Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy arrive at the Detour and choose Laundry. Again, not hard. Team Mojo Monica and Joseph arrive next and choose Foundry. Old Folks Fran and Barry arrive and (surprise, surprise) are having trouble finding the cluebox because they keep walking right past it! When they find it, they choose Laundry, as do Loveable Dorks Lori and Dave, but Old Folks finish before the Dorks even get to the balcony.

ROADBLOCK

Hippies BJ and Tyler arrive at the teatro and choose not to Yield anyone. The clue is a Roadblock. One member of each team must assemble a Greek statue, but teams don’t know there will be two extra pieces.

Back at the Detour Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda choose Foundry while Southern Parents Lake and Michelle choose Laundry. Pink Hotties Dani and Danielle arrive last and choose Laundry. Ray and Yolanda finish the bell Detour with ease while all other teams struggle with the laundry.

Loveable Dorks Lori and Dave find the right piece of clothing next and pull away from the Detour just ahead of Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda, but the latter get lost on the way out of town.

Meanwhile, Hippies BJ and Tyler finish the Roadblock and head to Tempio De Segesta, the Pit Stop. They arrive first and win a digital imaging package.

Lazy Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy arrive to the Roadblock second and finish the task when Team Mojo Monica and Joseph arrive. They get to the Pit Stop in a disappointing (to them) second place.

Back at the Detour, Southern Parents Lake and Michelle find the marked clothing. Soon after Pink Hotties Dani and Danielle finish too, but lucky for them Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda are still lost.

Old Folks Fran and Barry arrive at the Roadblock. Michelle of Team Mojo is having some trouble with the two extra pieces, but she figures it out and they finish third. Old Folks Fran and Barry finish in fourth.

Somehow Southern Parents Lake and Michelle catch up to Loveable Dorks Lori and Dave, but they run to the Pit Stop instead of the Roadblock. To make up for their mistake they Yield Pink Hotties Dani and Danielle. They will have to stop racing until the hour glass runs out.

Lori of the Loveable Dorks is struggling with the two extra pieces. She takes the statue apart three times. This allows Southern Parents Lake and Michelle to finish in fifth. The Dorks get sixth as the Yield ends for Pink Hotties Dani and Danielle.

Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda arrive, but one of the Dans builds the statue wrong twice. Ray and Yolanda finish the Roadblock first and despite getting a little lost on the way to the Pit Stop finish in seventh. Pink Hotties Dani and Danielle arrive last and they are eliminated from the race. The Frat Boys will be crushed to hear the news, I’m sure.
