Welcome to the David Heavener show. Not only does he write, produce, direct, and act the lead, he also performs the songs that provide the soundtrack for this act of cinematic masturbation.

"Angel Blade", perhaps owing part of its celestial appellation to Heavener's last name, is not for the faint of heart, as Heavener goes straight for the nudity, gore and brutality in less than three minutes. Heavener plays former police detective, Bradley Cooper, a cop over the edge with a tragic past who gets called back to the force when a serial killer begins stalking the streets of Las Vegas, preying upon pregnant hookers.

Now, the serial killer isn't technically serial, having only taken two victims, although the police classify it as four since both the victims were in the early stages of pregnancy. Cooper suspects a renowned psychologist, Dr. Gites (Marc Singer, "Beastmaster"), but whether Gites is doing things himself or working through a disturbed patient is still up in the air. The investigation is impeded by the fact that Police Commissioner Shanks (Richard Moll, Night Court) impedes the investigation at every turn, going so far as to order Cooper and his partner Kiel Parsons (Louis Mandylor, My Big Fat Greek Life) not to follow the investigation at all.

Cooper's the kind of cop who thinks nothing of breaking into a home to look for evidence, or playing recordings of confidential doctor/patient sessions. His search eventually takes him to a storefront that's part lingerie establishment, part S&M emporium, where he meets Frida (Margot Kidder, "Superman") and Sam (Amanda Righetti, The O.C., North Shore, Reunion) with whom he quickly falls into a torrid affair.

The film features many dreamlike interstitials of nude orgy scenes and settings of costumed fetishism. These, along with Heavener's nude sex scenes with Righetti, push "Angel Blade" along the lines of softcore pornography disguising itself as a police drama. The climax of the film features a victim who is too stupid to unlock a door from inside, effectively trapping her in a house with the killer. That's the last unbelievable premise for this reviewer, just barely surpassing even that of the revelation of the killer and said killer's motivations, throwing every single piece of evidence we witness squarely in the realm of non sequitur.

Don't buy this one. Don't rent it. If it comes on late night cable, find an infomercial. "Angel Blade" is a film that's to be avoided at any and all costs.
