A Dose of Reality: The Amazing Race 9 - Season Finale
by Dan Weltin
Published: May 18, 2006
Here we are, the season finale! Tonight will be the final two legs of the race. As a reminder, last week Team Mojo Monica and Joseph got what they deserved and were eliminated from the race. Now, the remaining three teams will head out from Bangkok, Thailand.

Hippies BJ and Tyler leave first at 11:18 p.m. They have a two-hour lead over the Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy who depart at 1:21 a.m. Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda aren’t too far behind them with a 1:28 a.m. departure.

Teams must travel to the Royal Kraal where an elephant will give them a Team Mobil Sidekick, which has the location of their next clue.

Hippies BJ and Tyler arrive first, but the elephant park isn’t open until 4:00 a.m. All three teams arrive in time and get their clue. Now teams must fly to Tokyo, Japan where they’ll drive to Shibuya, the Japanese version of Times Square. Once there teams must scan the giant TV screens for the one that gives a hint to their next clue.

Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda are first to the airport and book tickets on a flight to land at 2:15. Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy also book that same flight. Unfortunately, the flight is full and Hippies BJ and Tyler can’t get on. However, they find a flight that lands one and a half hours later. It doesn’t matter too much because Tyler has a Japanese girlfriend and speaks fluent Japanese giving them a huge advantage.

DETOUR

Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda and Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy land and head to their marked cars. Ray and Yolanda just get in and drive while Eric and Jeremy ask for directions first. It’s a smart move because they arrive in Shibuya first while Team Chi-Town is hopelessly lost.

The clue on the screen says “Find Hachiko.” Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy spot it and ask a local who’s Hachiko. Turns out it’s the statue of a dog in the area. The guy next to the statue in a yellow and red scarf gives them their next clue, which is a Detour.

This leg teams choose between Maiden and Messenger. In Maiden, teams head to a Japanese tea garden and transport a maiden (basically inside a wicker box) one third of a mile. In messenger, teams must ride folding bikes through the streets of Japan and deliver two packages to two separate buildings.

Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy choose Maiden. By this time Hippies BJ and Tyler arrive, figure out the clue and choose Messenger. Having been to Japan before and speaking the language helps them make quick work of the task.

Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda are stuck in traffic. Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy finish the Detour. Now teams must find the Capsuleland Hotel where instead of rooms, guests sleep in tiny capsules.

Hippies BJ and Tyler deliver their first package while Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda arrive at the street crossing. Chi-Town figures out the hint as the Hippies Deliver their second package. Chi-Town chooses Maiden.

Meanwhile, Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy arrive at the hotel and learn they’ll be spending the night. They receive a 9:00 a.m. departure time. Hippies BJ and Tyler arrive next and get a 9:15 a.m. departure time. Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda make it there third and won’t depart until 9:30 a.m.

ROADBLOCK

The next morning teams depart and drive to the Fujikyu Highland amusement park at the base of Mount Fuji. Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy arrive first, but Hippies BJ and Tyler pull in to the park only three cars behind.

Upon entering the park, teams must complete the Roadblock. One member of each team must ride three consecutive thrill rides and spot a man holding a sign with their next location (Lake Yamanaka). If they can’t relay the sign’s message, they’ll have to do all three rides again.

After their first thrill ride, Team Chi-Town reaches the toll booths, but can’t find their ticket stub (and can’t understand the operator). They have to pull over to the side and pay a teller. After receiving his money he pats Ray on the ass. Ray isn’t too happy about that.

Back at the amusement park, both teams spot the sign on the last ride. Now teams must drive to Lake Yamanaka and pedal a duck-shaped boat out to a larger boat shaped like a Swan, this leg’s Pit Stop.

The other two teams are well on their way to the Pit Stop by the time Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda arrive at the amusement park. By the time Yolanda finishes the Roadblock, the Frats and Hippies have reached the Pit Stop.

It’s a pedal boat race and Hippies BJ and Tyler finish first. They each win a Team Mobil Sidekick with three years of free service. Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy of course are second. Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda arrive last, but, not surprisingly, it’s a non-elimination leg. They lose all their money and possessions.

FINAL LEG

The next morning teams depart from their last Pit Stop. Hippies BJ and Tyler once again depart first at 12:18 a.m. They leave Ray and Yolanda 2,000 yen. Frat Boys are right behind at 12:20 a.m. Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda won’t leave until 3:01 a.m.

Teams must now fly to Anchorage, Alaska where they’ll pick up a marked car.

Hippies BJ and Tyler and Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy take different routes to the hotel to drop off their car. Frats think the Hippies are idiots, but it turns out that the Hippies route is faster. They arrive to the hotel first. The airport shuttle doesn’t depart until 6:00 a.m., so they spend some time on the Internet booking a flight. They ask the hotel concierge to pretend not to speak English for the other teams. The Frat Boys arrive and the hotel staff can barely keep a straight face as they tell them they don’t have Internet service! So, Eric and Jeremy use a phone instead.

Hippies BJ and Tyler find a late flight into Anchorage on the Internet, but Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy have better luck on the phone. Their flight lands at 7:50 a.m.

Meanwhile, Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda are off begging. Some drunk businessmen think Yolanda looks like Janet Jackson. They give her a lot of yen.

Back at the hotel Hippies BJ and Tyler pretend that they have just arrived while they’ve actually been spying on the Frat Boys. There is still no sign of Ray and Yolanda as the first airport shuttle arrives. However, Team Chi-Town shows up at the airport before the flights take off.

Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy board their plane alone while Hippies BJ and Tyler switch their flight to one that also lands at 7:50 a.m. Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda find that same flight as well. All three teams meet up for a connecting flight and fly to Anchorage together.

THE LAST DETOUR

The three teams land in Alaska and now must drive to Mirror Lake. Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy and Hippies BJ and Tyler arrive first. It’s a Detour.

For this final Detour, teams choose between Drill It and Deliver It. In Drill It, teams set up an ice fishing camp. They must drill 10 holes with an auger and then push a shack onto the lake to cover two holes. In Deliver It, teams must load a bush plane with medical supplies and direct their pilot to navigate a 150-mile roundtrip flight to deliver the supplies.

The weather is too nasty to fly, so both teams must do Drill It.

Meanwhile, Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda once again show their poor navigating skills and have to stop for directions on the way to Mirror Lake putting them well behind the other teams.

Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy finish the Detour first. Teams must now drive to Kincaid Park where they’ll put on snowshoes and use a map to find their next clue.

Hippies BJ and Tyler finish the Detour as Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda arrive. They of course choose Drill It.

Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy arrive at the park ahead of Hippies BJ and Tyler. They have a bit of a lead, which grows even larger as the Hippies keep walking past the snowshoes (who are they Fran and Barry?).

The Frat Boys find the clue first. Teams must now fly to their final destination city, Denver. Once there they’ll take a taxi to Clear Creek History Park in Golden, Colorado and search for their next clue.

Hippies BJ and Tyler finish the snowshoe clue as Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda arrive. Meanwhile Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy arrive at the airport and book a flight for 11:10 p.m. On the cab ride to the airport, BJ and Tyler borrow a phone and book passage on that same flight. Ray and Yolanda finally finish snowshoeing and are able to catch up to the others at the airport.

THE LAST ROADBLOCK

All three teams travel to Denver on the same flight. Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy are first to the park and find their clue as Hippies BJ and Tyler arrive. In turn the Hippies find their clue as Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda arrive.

Teams must now drive to the Red Rocks Amphitheater where the race began.

Frat Boys Eric and Jeremy arrive to the amphitheater first. It’s a Roadblock.

In this final Roadblock one member of each team must run into a field of 285 foreign flags and find the nine flags of the countries they visited. They must then place them in the order they were traveled. There is a placard to help them, but it also contains incorrect flags. Their teammate may guide them in the task, but not physically assist. Once done, teams will race to the finish line where Phil and the other eight teams are waiting.

Hippies BJ and Tyler arrive shortly after. Team Chi-Town is still at the Detour.

Eric and Jeremy have found all correct nine flags, but have placed them in the wrong order. BJ and Tyler don’t see the Russian flag on their placard so they assume it isn’t in the field. They get all the other flags, but still have an empty slot. They realize the Russian flag must be there and run back into the field for it as the Frats continue to make an even bigger mess of their flag order. At one point they even bring a correct flag back into the field.

Hippies BJ and Tyler get the right order first and race to the finish line. They have no trouble taking first. It’s great to see nice guys finishing first. Always supportive and always having fun, the Hippies deserve to win.

Frat boys Eric and Jeremy finish in second place (turns out they’re not even frat brothers and one is a college dropout!). Team Chi-Town Ray and Yolanda arrive third. Here’s the big board with the final placement of all 11 teams. See you next time!
