From a book by Alice Hoffman comes this mashup of "The Little Mermaid" and "Splash" for the tween set: a mermaid comes out of the sea to find out what love is, but every time her legs get wet she gets her tail back.

Sara Paxton (Summerland) is Aquamarine, the gummy-worm loving mermaid who swims away from home in defiance of her father who wants to marry her off to some squid. Aquamarine believes in love -- a myth among the merfolk. If she can prove to her father that love exists, then he'll call off the wedding (and the occassional hurricane-like weather patterns).

Enter Hailey (JoJo Levesque, "RV") and Claire (Emma Roberts, "Spymate", "Nancy Drew"), two best friends who spend their time on the beach pining after the hunky lifeguard Raymond (Jake McDorman, Quintuplets) and studying up on boys by poring over every relationship magazine they can get their hands on. But their friendship is on the verge of being broken up, as Hailey's mother is preparing to move from Florida to Australia.

Claire and Hailey discover Aquamarine.
L-R: Roberts, Levesque, Paxton.
When they find Aquamarine washed up in the community pool, the three become quick friends. But when Aquamarine announces her intentions -- and her intended target, Raymond -- they're suddenly not so sure they want to help. That is, until they learn that whenever you help a mermaid, you get a wish. They'd rather have their friendship intact and lose Raymond, so they begin schooling Aquamarine in the ways of flirting and dating -- but even if it's enough to get past the scheming Cecilia (Arielle Kebbel, "American Pie Presents: Band Camp"), will it be enough to win Raymond's heart? Or will Aquamarine discover there are all kinds of love instead?

If your girls love the Disney Channel, they'll love "Aquamarine". It's a positive, family-oriented bit of fun.

The special features are just as geared toward the target demographic as the movie is. Set to pop music, you'll see the audition tapes of the principals, a backstage tour of the set, and mini-featurettes on doing the hair, makeup and wardrobe. There are a half-dozen deleted scenes, an unnecessary 15-second introduction by Director Elizabeth Allen, and two commentary tracks: a full-length commentary by Director Elizabeth Allen and Producer Susan Cartsonis, and a second, scene-specific commentary with Roberts, JoJo, and Paxton.

Oddly enough, the soundtrack for the film features a song performed by Sara Paxton (the closing track, "Connected") as well as one by Emma Roberts ("Island in the Sun"). But I thought JoJo was supposed to be the pop star of the trio, and really expected an "Aquamarine"-themed video to be included in the special features. That would have seemed a no-brainer.

Previews on this disc include "Just My Luck", "Dr. Dolittle 3" and "Because of Winn-Dixie".
