DVD Review: 3rd Rock From The Sun - Season 5
by Chad Maddux
Published: August 28, 2006
The fifth season of 3rd Rock From the Sun is now available on DVD. Dick, Sally, Harry, and Tommy are nearing the end of their experiment on Earth living as humans. With just one season remaining, anything is possible.
The series lasted for six season on NBC. This season features 22 episodes that originally aired from September 21, 1999 through May 23, 2000. This season features repeated return appearances of William Shatner as "The Big Giant Head." All of the other regular cast members and most of the regular guest stars are back as well.
To read more of my opinions on the series, you may read my past reviews of seasons two and three (linked in the data box at left). For another opinion of the series, please read my colleague RJ Carter's review of season one (also linked in the data box).
At the end of last season, the aliens were horrified to learn that The Big Giant Head had impregnated Vicki who had an abbreviated pregnancy of several hours before suddenly reaching full term. The season ended as the unseen baby was seen by the aliens. This season begins with the relieving news that the baby is not a purple tube but is, in fact, fully human. However, Vicki remembers her experience and hopes her "little E.T." will make her a national celebrity.
This season features one of my all-time favorite episodes, "Dial M for Dick." Mary invites the Solomons along for a murder mystery weekend. Unfortunately, the aliens believe that the staged murders are, in fact, real. The episode is absolutely hilarious with its overacted mystery players and the naive Solomon clan. It does feature an important lesson in love: never accuse your girlfriend of murder.
The season ends with yet another return of The Big Giant Head. The episodes featuring William Shatner are not my favorites. Not that there's anything wrong with William Shatner but he can be really annoying at times. He would also return midseason for "The Big Giant Head Returns."
The only bonus feature including with the fifth season was a set of bloopers. They were funny, as always, but rather short.
Only one season remains unreleased of one of the funniest comedy series ever created. This season, although not my favorite season, is still hilarious and absolutely worthy of an addition to your DVD collection. Although I wish there were a few more bonus features, the series is its own reward.
