A Dose of Reality: Celebrity Duets - Week 2 Results
by Sheila Franklin
Published: September 9, 2006
This week on Duets, the producers decide to allow the celebs to do their
numbers tonight with the same performers as last night. This is gratifying news for those of us
doing reviews, because we are basically working without a program. Song titles
are never given, and unless you are familiar with the particular guest artist, it
takes a lot of googling to find them.
The show starts off with the 7 remaining “contestants” (this is for charity)
singing Blondie’s “One Way or Another” together. This is a clever gauge for
telling the good voices from the not-so-good, i.e. Lucy, Lea, and dare I say it,
Cheech. Sorry, man, but you’re still cool in my book.
Lucy Lawless and Kenny Loggins
It looks like Lucy has taken a cue from Lea. Her dresses in both the opening and
in her performance of “Footloose” with Kenny are both rather trashy and very
short. Nobody seems to notice that she can’t really carry a tune, not Kenny, not
Wayne, and apparently not the home viewers who decide she is safe this
week.
Carly Patterson and Anita Pointer
Rumor has it that Cathy Rigby may be retiring from her role in the musical “Peter
Pan”. If this is the case, I think it would be an excellent idea to cast Carly in the
role. With all her youthful charm and exuberance, this would be a casting coup.
Tonight, as she performs “Jump (For My Love)” with Anita, I am hoping she will
get to stick around for a little extra training. Unfortunately, she is in the bottom
three.
When Wayne asks the judges what they think about this decision, Foster uses it
as an excuse to start quibbling with Marie about time limits again. I hope this is
not going to be a regular feature on the show, with poor LR (Little Richard), stuck in
the middle.
Alphonso Ribeiro and Jeffrey Osborne
Alphonso admits that he is bad with lyrics. As he starts singing “Stay With Me
Tonight” it’s apparent that he is also not that adept at staying on key. He is cute
when he sings to Marie, but it almost sounds like an excuse when he complains
that because he has a “day job” he hasn’t sufficient time to prepare. (Hey Alph,
I’ll take your day job anytime.) Lucky for him, he is safe.
Cheech Marin and Clint Black
There is definitely a mutual admiration thing going on between Cheech and Clint,
as Clint calls him an “icon”. While they are singing, they are certainly having a
good ol’ time. Cheech is slightly off-key during their performance of “Like The
Rain” and his untrained voice is a little pitchy, but he manages a bit of harmony
so we should give him credit for that. It is sad that he is the bottom three.
Lea Thompson and Belinda Carlisle
Lea is also back in a short skirt and her rendition of “I Get Weak”, like last night,
sounds better with the help of Belinda. I admire the way she and her kids
obviously adore each other. You just can’t buy that kind of love. When she is told
that she is in the bottom three, she apologizes to them, saying “it’s nice to
look cool in front of your kids.”
Hal Sparks and Wynonna Judd
Wynonna mentions that pairing up with anyone musically is “like a blind date”.
Singing “No One Else On Earth”, we again note the intensity of Wynonna and
Hal. What is supposed to be a duet becomes an uncomfortable screamfest on
Hal’s part. However, he manages to stay safe for another week.
Jai Rodriguez and Brian McKnight
Jai has decided not to be “so Spanish”, but partner Brian tells him just to “be
yourself”. This is superb advice, for again Jai has turned in the best performance
of the evening with “Shining Star”. Superlative harmony, choreography, and hey,
nice coat, Jai! It is no surprise that he is safe.
When Carly, Cheech, and Lea are brought up to face the inevitable elimination,
Carly is deemed safe. Before we hear the end result we are treated to Toby
Keith and Lindsay Hawn singing the title track to the movie “Broken Bridges”. I
like country music, but at this point I would have preferred some rock n’ roll.
Final Thoughts
Lea is sent packing and her comment is, “sorry babies”, to her kids. You still get
my vote as mom of the year, Lea.
Best Little Richardism: (oddly, referring to my last night’s best
“LRism”)
“It was a compliment. It wasn’t a back hand. I use the front of my
hand.”
