A Dose of Reality: Celebrity Duets - Week 3 Results
by Sheila Franklin
Published: September 16, 2006
Who dressed Wayne for tonight’s Duets? Between that shiny
orchid-colored vest (no, not purple!) and those huge bell bottoms, he looks like
his top doesn’t know what his bottom is doing. Maybe he can get a few pointers
from Jai. Maybe not. Taylor is wearing another shade of violet and Jai is in
purple velvet and all three of them clash. Okay, enough fashion police
business.
As they collectively perform, I become aware that there are only two women left,
and there were only three to begin with. Maybe other females were afraid to
compete against the mighty Xena.
Jai Rodriguez and Taylor Dayne
Fortunately for Jai, Taylor has once again chosen the lower vocal range of this
song so that Jai can be comfortable in his. After all, there is no law that says that
the woman in a duet has to be a soprano. As they perform “Love Will
Lead You Back” Jai even pops in a little falsetto. At the end of their performance we learn that Jai is safe.
Carly Patterson and Jesse McCartney
Carly again gets to sing with Jesse and he admits that “Right Where You Want
Me” is kind of a “girly song.” They are adorable together and you would think that
keeping someone her age would be good for the show’s demographics, but even
with Jesse’s help, she is in the bottom three. A couple of agressive Jesse fans try to jump onstage for a quick grab at the
singer, but it only takes Wayne a couple of seconds to thwart their advances.
Nice save, Wayne.
After the break which, by the way, had a commercial for zit remover, Wayne
saunters on over to the two “freaky trouble makers.” When he asks them what
they would have done had they reached the stage, one pre-pubescent answers,
“You don’t want to know.” I wouldn’t think that a kid that age would either be a
serious security problem or sexual threat, but there are a lot of hormones in Big
Macs.
Cheech Marin and Aaron Neville
Cheech may not have the greatest voice, but when he and Aaron belt out “Sitting
On The Dock Of The Bay,” with a touch of harmony thrown into the mix, they just
come off like two good buds hangin’ out. That’s as it should be. Although he is
again in the bottom three, he says he will have more fun if he sticks around. This
too, is how it should be.
Alphonso Ribeiro and Denise Willams
The whiner is back. Didn’t he say he sang backup for Little Richard once? And
doesn’t backup generally involve some harmony? To his credit, Alphonso and Denise
display fine chemistry during their performance of “It’s Gonna Take A Miracle,” and he is safe for another week.
Wayne asks David and Marie what they think it would take to make it all the way
through the competition. Marie says, “a lot of phone calls.” Dave says that the
music must “take you on a journey,” the way Alphonso and Denise did during
their last duet. I think it is more like memory lane with some of these performers,
but I love hearing most of them.
Lucy Lawless and Dionne Warwick
I love hearing Dionne, anyway. I wish that they had picked any other number
besides “I Know I’ll Never Love This Way Again.” I would have loved a rousing
chorus of “San Jose,” but it is not to be. Lucy is shiny and nasal and they receive
a standing ovation. Hmmmm, I wonder why.
Hal Sparks and Dennis DeYoung
It’s a good thing Hal gets to sing the “creepy robot” part in “Mr. Roboto” for then
he doesn’t have to actually sing the first verse. He slides through the rest of the
number singing in sync with Dennis, which usually indicates that one can’t
handle harmony in a duet. They are enjoying themselves though, and their
happiness seems to spreading through the audience.
Unfortunately for him, Hal is in the bottom three and, curiously enough, Lucy has
received the highest number of votes. But the good news is that Cheech is safe
for another week. This show really needs its mascot and how could anyone not
love Cheech? He is, after all, an icon of at least my generation. We must
say bu-bye to all-things-cute Carly. She takes the news well, even if her mom is
weepy. Even David and Wayne look a little teary-eyed.
Best Little Richardism: None, but he got quoted at least three
times by Wayne and the contestants. So I leave this in as a get-back-here-quick
from all of us who are his devoted fans.
Final Thoughts: Carly, hang in there. Shows like this are not always fair, but then life isn’t always
fair. You got a gold in the Olympics and someday you will be flying in that Peter
Pan costume.
