America's favorite four-color fat cat is back in action in this DVD that's fun for the whole family -- and this time, he's brought some new friends. Bill Murray ("Broken Flowers") returns to voice Garfield in this riff on The Prince and the Pauper that finds Garfield accidentally switched with his royal lookalike, Prince XII (voiced by the inimitable Tim Curry).

Breckin Meyer (Married to the Kellys, "Herbie Fully Loaded") plays Jon Arbuckle, Garfield's ostensible owner. The movie opens with Jon going to great pains to create the perfect environment to pop the question to his veterinarian girlfriend, Liz (Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ghost Whisperer). Garfield does what he can to sabotage things, but his efforts aren't necessary -- Liz preempts Jon's question with the announcement that she has to pack this evening for London to give a speech to the Royal Conservancy group. With the wind taken out of his sales, Jon bounces back with a new idea: he'll go to London and surprise Liz there.

Meanwhile, across the pond (as the quaint expression goes), the viewers learn of another orange tubby tabby -- Prince XII -- who has just been left the estate of Carlyle Castle by his deceased owner who was very big on providing a place for animals. This doesn't sit well with Lord Dargis (Billy Connolly, "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events", "Open Season"), who expected to inherit the lands. But he still will... if something unfortunate should happen to Prince! A basket and a river later, and Prince finds himself in the sewers of London while Dargis is busily preparing to pave over the estate for spas and condominiums -- with plans to either chase off the remaining animals, or serve them to the guests!

This is when the shell game occurs. Garfield, spotted by the Carlyle butler Smithee (who also played bat-butler Alfred in the short-lived Birds of Prey), is mistaken for the missing Prince and returned to Carlyle Castle, where only the other animals know he's an imposter -- but they treat him like Prince nonetheless, and protect him from Dargis for the sake of their own lives. And when you start treating Garfield like a prince, there's a real danger that he's going to start taking his new liberties seriously!

Together at last, Garfield and Prince hatch a plan to take care
of the evil Lord Dargis before he takes over Castle Carlyle.
The animal trainers really went to work on the making of this film. In one scene, you will come away believing that a motley crew of barnyard denizens really can be trained to make a homemade lasagna!

Among the many animal voiceovers, viewers will find Bob Hoskins, Sharon Osbourne, Rhys Ifans, and Vinnie Jones of "X-Men: The Last Stand".

This DVD contains both full screen and widescreen versions of this film, with the widescreen extended over the theatrical version by an extra eight minutes. Bonus features include a Brian Anthony music video, "Come and Get It", set to clips from the film, and three short segments with Garfield creator Jim Davis who demonstrates how to draw Garfield, Odie, and Pooky.

There's a Garfield comic strip exclusive to this DVD -- three panels that can be paged through using the remote keys. And there are two games: "Odie's Photo Album" is a tough one, wherein you are expected to match one messed up photo (gradually becoming clearer) to one of four still shots. You have to do this before the time runs out, and the four clear pictures are very similar to each other. The other game is "Garfield's Maze Game", a 3D, first person navigation through a hedge labyrinth to get to the plate of lasagna at the end.

Audio is available in English 5.1 Dolby Surround, French Dolby Surround or Spanish Dolby Surround, with subtitles in English or Spanish.

Previews on this set include "Ice Age: The Meltdown" and "Care Bears: Oopsy Does It".
