A Dose of Reality: The Amazing Race 10 - Episode 02: Car Trouble
by Dan Weltin
Published: September 27, 2006
This week, Team Rehab Tyler and James lead off with a 9:04 p.m. departure from the Great Wall of China. Teams have to take a bus and then a train through Mongolia to the capital where they observe a ceremony at a temple.

There are two buses for the teams: the first departs at 12:00 a.m. and the second bus departs two hours later. Five teams will take each bus.

While waiting for the bus, Sarah tries to earn some money buy performing parlor tricks with her fake leg for the locals. Maybe she’s trying to buy a new one since her hydrolic knee is broken. The hopping doesn’t impress and she and her buddy Peter don’t make any money.

Both buses arrive at the train station before the earliest train, so separating the teams on two buses doesn’t amount to much except for some anxiety attacks.

After the train ride, teams have to drive a military jeep to the town of Tenelj where they ride horses in Mongolian dress.

This drive proves too complex for many teams with a lot of them getting lost and stopping for directions. Coalminer David and his wife Mary make the smart move and get a local to come with them.

Team Rehab Tyler and James get a flat tire on the way, and either their jack is broken, or they aren’t smart enough to figure out how it works. Argumentative Dating Couple Rob and Kimberly stop but they keep going before they have time to give them their jack. ‘Bama Moms Lyn and Karlyn just keep driving by. Meanwhile Cheerleaders Kellie and Jamie’s car stalls, but they quickly get it running again. And not to be outdone, Coalminer David and his wife Mary get their car stuck in mud. It’s so bad they are given another vehicle.

DETOUR

Once at the horse place, teams change into Mongolian costumes and ride to their next clue, the Detour. Kimberly, who hates horses to begin with, hits her head on a branch and falls off the horse. One of the Beauty Queens, either Dustin or Kandice (it’s hard to tell in the shot) falls off her horse too and gets dragged for a few feet. She’s OK, though.

The Detour for this leg is Take It Down or Fill It Up. In Take It Down teams must take down canvas walls and roof of a nomadic hut and fold them correctly and recreate a series of knots to tie them together. In Fill It Up teams must lead a cart pulled by an ox-like animal to a river where they’ll fill four buckets which they’ll use to fill a larger barrel.

The oxish creature doesn’t seem too hard to lead, but the trip back is bumpy and a lot of the water spills. The task will require a couple trips. However, the knot system is hard to learn, too, so no Detour seems better than the other. The knots are so tricky that Sarah and her Coach/Boyfriend Peter switch tasks midway through and try to fill up the buckets. This doesn’t prove any easier for them as the animal runs away from Peter…twice. They end up going back to tying knots again.

Peter and Sarah are one of the worst dating couples of the show. I know Jonathan and Victoria from Season 6 were probably the worst, but these guys are a close second. They bitch constantly. He’s less of a boyfriend and more of a psychiatrist or coach. Because she’s missing a leg, he treats her as emotionally unstable or simply as a child. She’s an adult (even though she doesn’t act like one all the time).

After the Detour teams must drive to Hotel Mongolia. Teams have to bring all safety gear back with them, but Beauty Queens Dustin and Kandice and Cho. Bros. Erwin and Godwin have lost a helmet. Dustin and Kandice fall from first to eighth because of this mistake.

More jeeps start crapping out on the teams. I guess every so often the engines or battery needs to be cranked ala the Model T. Cheerleaders Kellie and Jamie and ‘Bama Moms Lyn and Karlyn have the worst of the luck putting them further behind in last place.

ROADBLOCK

Once teams arrive at the hotel, one member of each team must complete the Roadblock before sprinting to the finish line. This week one member must shoot a flaming arrow into the air and hit a target 160 feet away.

Coach Peter and Sarah finish first and win a trip for two to Mexico. Team Rehab Tyler and James finish second. Daddy/Daughter Team Duke and Lauren are next in third and Dating Couple Tom and Terry in fourth.

In fifth place is Beauty Queens Dustin and Kandice, sixth place Argumentative Dating Couple Rob and Kimberly, seventh is Coalminer David and his wife Mary, in eighth is Cho. Bros. Erwin and Godwin and finishing ninth is ‘Bama Moms Lyn and Karlyn.

Cheerleaders Kellie and Jamie arrive last and are eliminated. Kellie could not hit the target with the bow and arrow and eventually quit when it got too dark to see effectively.
