A Dose of Reality: Dancing with the Stars 3 - Week 3 Results
by Sheila Franklin
Published: September 27, 2006
Here goes the first 20 minute delay-for-time, and the powers that be have
decided to waste it by recapping the rules one more time. Somebody keeps
forgetting that this is a popularity contest, not a professional competition. Even
Tom says to Len, “You’re such a grump.”
Encore:
Vivica and Nick recreate their “Hey Sexy Lady” tango from last night, and Viv is
as stunning as ever. All that “Kill Bill” training has certainly paid off. She is sure of
herself, sexy, and she and Nick have that chemistry that the judges are always
so concerned about.
New York’s Scissor Sisters are up next, singing “Take Your Mama,” while Cheryl
and Jesse dance in the foreground. Lead Singer Jake Shears (I assume this is
how they came up with the band’s name), are certainly influenced by the likes of
early Bowie and Elton John. Heaven help us if disco is coming back. Just the
thought of polyester makes me break out in a rash.
Backstage Chatter:
The whole pessimistic mood tonight is contagious and seems to linger even
backstage. Willa, though, is oozing with happiness. Personally, I think the ladies are
voting for Maksim. When Samantha asks Emmitt if he was robbed, he replies,
“At gunpoint.”
Audience Chatter:
More of the same. Some comments were confusing, “If I want to see cartwheels
and handstands, I’ll go see a cheerleading competition.” Excuse me. Didn’t Vivica
perform a cartwheel last week and didn’t the judges love it? This audience
member clearly has not learned the rules. Seriously though, most of them
followed this vein, made by a man in a very conservative suit, “America is based
on rules. There’s nothing better than winning by playing by the rules.”
Safe:
Willa and Max, Sara and Tony, Monique and Louis
Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo is backed by a choir while 8 of the pros dance to a
Paso Doble that has been choreographed by Louis. This is something right out
of “The Omen.” This is also something that talented dancers, musicians and
singers do. Like good actors, they can convey emotions through their art.
Backstage Chatter:
Samantha talks to the “safe” couples. Sara says next week she will ride in on a
horse. Willa won’t make a commitment on who she thinks will be going home
and suggests a 4-way tie. Monique says she is “working hard.” With all the
Internet “exposure” she and her skirt have gotten from last night’s performance,
she may also want to have a chat with the costumer.
The SlimFast at Home Commercial:
Lysonia and Christian tackle the waltz this week, and she has to perform in front
of her co-workers. I kept looking around her office for casually placed SlimFast
products. Lysonia says that she, “eats, drinks, and lives dancing.” She looks
great, so weigh her already! Can’t inquiring minds know how much she has
lost?
The Scissor Sisters are back, singing, “I Don’t Feel Like Dancing.” Maybe not,
but they are sure are smiling. If retro-disco is in now, then expect a whole rash of
musicals in the works. How about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes in a remake of
“Saturday Night Fever?”
Just as things are starting to lighten up, we are back to more technical crap
about product and performance. Words like chemistry, confidence, and control
are tossed around and Carrie Ann says that the performers have to “live for the
moment only.”
Safe:
Vivian and Nick, Joey and Edyta, Mario and Karina, Emmitt and Cheryl
That leaves Jerry and Kym, and Harry and Ashly on the bottom. Jerry gets his
wish and gets to stay for next week’s free waltz instruction by Kym. That’s some
perc. Those that don’t waltz will do the scary Pasa Doble.
Poor Harry looks surprised that he is going home. He has improved but he
is just not the dancing type and probably not in the viewer’s demographic
bracket. Poor Lisa. Even the gig with ET couldn’t save Harry. Saddest of
all is Ashly, who never seems to get a decent dance partner and stick around. As
they dance to “All By Myself” I read their lips (I am getting pretty good at this).
Ashly says she loves Harry and is sorry, and Harry keeps mouthing, “It’s alright.”
Best backstage comment: (Tony, in response to Sara’s backstage riding
in on a horse comment) “That would be me.”
Best audience chatter’s comment: “Len should lighten up on the Geritol
and focus more on entertainment.”
Best judge’s comment: None. Let’s take a moment to hope that the
judges get back to their fun-loving selves.
