Interview: Taylor Handley: Texas Taylor
by Scott Juba
Published: October 6, 2006
Every story has a beginning. Today, moviegoers will experience the opening chapter of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” series when “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning” opens nationwide. Taylor Handley, who stars in the prequel, says the film adds a new dimension to the popular horror franchise. “The good thing about the prequel is that it’s a different story, and it takes place before [the events of the other films happened],” he says.
The release of this prequel comes with high box-office expectations after the 2003 remake of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” raked in more than $80 million domestically. “There’s always pressure when you’re going to release a movie,” Handley admits, “but the writers and producers were confident in the fan base.”
Some hardcore fans of the franchise still consider the original 1974 “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” film to be the best. Although Handley is now a fan of that film, he says he did not watch the original “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” prior to filming the prequel in order to avoid developing preconceived notions about the story. “I wanted to start off really fresh, because this prequel is the beginning of the entire franchise,” he explains.
While Handley is a relative newcomer to the big screen, he is not a stranger to successful television franchises. He garnered attention for his recurring roles on Dawson’s Creek and The O.C. Next, he’ll star in the Kevin Williamson series, Hidden Palms, which will air on the CW Network. According to Handley, the show, which focuses on bizarre events that occur in a resort town, will be a success because of the diverse age groups it appeals to.
“They have two things going on in the series,” he tells me. “They have the adult world that goes on, and they have the kids world that goes on. It all meshes together. I think that will generate a range of viewers who will want to see the interaction between the two groups of people.”
Unlike many actors in their twenties, Handley has nearly a decade of acting experience on his resume. He says that experience helps him add depth to his performances. “Practice makes perfect, so going to acting class and being in plays and starting in the business when [you’re young] allows you to learn along the way. I think it really helped starting at a young age to get me to where I’m at today.”
While Handley continues to assert his position as a successful mainstream actor, he admits that he experienced times that forced him to question his choice of professions. “There’s always questions when months and months go by without any work. My love of the industry and my love of acting kept me going. Also, the support of my family helped me to get through those times when there’d be eight months with no work. Then, something would just pop up, and it would kind of refresh me.”
His career outlook now looks much brighter as “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning” prepares to slay its competition this weekend.
