Fans will find themselves walking on air when they get a load of the goodies to be had in Anchor Bay's collector's edition release of the entire series of "The Greatest American Hero".

Let's start with the mundane stuff first: If you've seen the contents of the prior releases of the first three seasons, then -- content-wise -- you've seen it all. The discs in this set are the same discs in the same slimline cases that were previously released, minus the original cardboard slipcovers. If you've got those sets already, let me recommend you put them on eBay. Why?

Because this set, limited to 20,000 pieces, has literally got it going on! Immediately apparent is the outer casing -- a black tin box, with the hinged lid embossed with nothing more than the red symbol worn by the title's main character, Ralph Hinkley (played by William Katt). Open that, and you literally have to dig your way down before you encounter the actual discs. So before you get to watch anything, you will first find:

...an iron-on insignia, just like Ralph's. If you don't already own a set of red jammies (as Ralph's partner, FBI agent Bill Maxwell, played by I-Spy's Robert Culp, always called them), then go out and get yourself a set so you can affix this plastical symbol to the chest. And that way you'll have something comfortable to wear when you settle in for a marathon of episodes.

But, in the words of Ron Popeil, that's not all! You'll also get...

Believe it or not, you get all these cool goodies
with this special collector's edition.
...this super-keen 5x7 plastic replica of the famous Instruction Manual. It's about an inch thick, but there are only two pages -- the first one, which is simply the symbol and the word along the edge "INSTRUCTIONS", and the page following that, which contains the symbols and a polarized lens that, when you tilt the page, takes the text from "little green guy"-ese into English. The remaining 3/4 of an inch of the book doesn't open... except from the back. You see, that's where the two AA batteries go. This baby lights up! (Now why didn't the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" people think of this?)

And while you're sitting there, watching the show, thumbing through your light up booklet while you're comfortable in your freshly ironed red PJs, you may want to ward off any chills with... a full-sized Greatest American Hero cape! Yes, a cape! How cool is that? By the time I got to the episode indices and discs, this geeky fan boy was already squealing like a little girl, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

So if you happen to knock on my door some time and hear the familiar strains of Joey Scarbury's "Believe it or Not" wafting through the air, don't be alarmed if I answer the door dressed... a little oddly. Because, Halloween or not, there's a new way to enjoy the misadventures of high school teacher Ralph Hinkley, FBI agent Bill Maxwell, and Ralph's fiance (and later, wife), attorney Pam Davidson (Connie Selleca). It may not be the height of fashion in your world, but in ours, it's going to be the latest thing.
