DVD Review: Who Made the Potatoe Salad?
by R.J. Carter
Published: November 11, 2006
Meeting the future in-laws is a nerve-wracking event for a man even at the best of times. But for police officer Michael (Jaleel White, Family Matters), it's a full-blown nightmare.
The film establishes Michael early on as a black Barney Fife, as he chases a fleeing felon on foot only to end up handcuffed and pantsed, all while being jeered at by the local teens. But while he's physically inept, his heart is in the right place and he's far from being any kind of a coward. So it's easy to see the good man that Ashley (Jennia Fredrique, Passions) sees in him.
When Ashley accepts Michael's proposal, they agree to meet Ashley's parents over the Thanksgiving holiday and pop the news. But there's a better chance of Michael himself being popped. For one thing, Ashley's daddy (Clifton Davis, "The Gospel") is a former black panther who did prison time for the attempted murder of a police officer. And her brother, June Bug (DeRay Davis, "School for Scoundrels"), is a reefer-smoking gangsta with a deficiency for grammar. Both of them hate cops, and make no attempt to hide their feelings from Michael, calling him a pig (with or without the "mf" preceding modifier) and other names.
When the Thanksgiving dinner finally rolls about and the rest of the family drops in, Michael gets to see first hand just how dysfunctional they all are, with or without his presence, and it's disturbing. But somehow the fracas all gets blamed on Michael. Desperate to finally come out the hero, Michael calls in a friend to stage something that will make Michael look good... and things go rapidly and devastatingly downhill from there.

Love Conquers All? Ashley and Michael have a heart to heart
after the Thanksgiving dinner blowout. (L-R: Jennia Fredrique,
Jaleel White)

"Who Made the Potatoe Salad?" is a bit silly, and a bit stereotypical, but remains nonetheless watchable. The language crosses the R-rating barrier more times than can be counted, and there is some visible drug use. Eddie Griffin makes a guest appearance as Malik, the man whom Ashley's father originally intended for her to marry -- he's now serving quadruple-life in prison; and the big man Tommy "Tiny" Lister shows up with a torch still burning for Ashley. Hmm, who wins in a wrestling match: Lister or a grown-up Urkel?
